Thank you. We are now on a low dose of salbutamol and that seems to be working. We’ve also changed the bedding and try to keep his room as dust mite free as it possible. Thabks again for the advice.

My son is allergic to dust mites, among other things, and I've changed all his bedding to organic wool where possible, including pillows, comforter, mattress pad (which is anti-microbial and an all natural deterrent) and 100% organic cotton sheets. Also, all natural latex mattresses and pillows are recommended, as they are hypoallergenic.

I've also bought a heavy duty purifier (which I'm selling, as I'm moving abroad, so let me know if you're interested), which measure the air quality in the room and cleans it. He turns this on every single night: https://www.amazon.co.uk/WINIX-Purifier ... B011U6W7BM

Hello Annbir, how is your son now? Yes, there are many pest control companies that can help you in this case but should look for the best because it is about your son's health.

Thanks so much for this, I suspected as much. It might be worth getting allergy testing just to check that it isn’t something else. I suppose they’re impossible to eradicate completely. Those anti dustmite bedding sounds like a good idea. I didn’t even know that they exist. Anyway, I hope your little ones grow out of it soon.

Hi,

You can do a lot to reduce dust mites in your home but it takes a lot of effort. Before you start down that track I would recommend having your child tested for allergies so you know exactly what the allergen you need to focus on is. I had to persist with my GP to get a private referral to an immunologist for this. In my case it was dust mites. We now have anti dust mite bedding and covers for pillows and mattresses. Very thorough vacuuming is a must. All clothes in drawers are in plastic bags. You can either hot wash textiles or buy anti allergen washing detergent on Amazon. Washing duvets and pillows regularly helps. Don’t bother with the gadgets that plug into electrical sockets though!

Good luck!

Was that a paediatric consultant who actually suggested that?? It’s nigh impossible to eradicate house dust mites from your house do don’t waste your money on
Pest control services or sprays which will probably more harmful for your son’s asthma. It is advisable to reduce the amount of house dust mites and also to treat your son’s symptoms of asthma or more common symptoms like itchy eyes or runny nose. The allergen that causes these symptoms is actually the poo of the house dust mites. Modern homes which are warm due to efficient insulation and heating , as well as humid air which circulates for days, all provide the perfect environment for the mites to thrive. They are everywhere: carpets cushions sofas curtains clothes. The bed is the favourite habitat- warm, sweat to provide water and zillions of tiny skin flakes which we shed continuously and provide the mites with food. So as well as damp dusting surfaces and regular hoovering and mopping floors, change bed linen frequently, hoover the mattress and headboard. Perhaps replace the carpet with modern hard wood floor in your son’s room and maybe an easy to clean blind for his window rather than curtains. How far you go to change furnishings very much depends on how severe your son’s asthma is.Bear in mind that other factors will affect his breathing not just house dust mites. Feather pillows and duvet are a no-no for him. Hope this helps xx

Hi,
My son has had asthma for a few months now and his paediatrician recommended treating the house for dust mites. Has anyone had any experience with this? Did you use a pest control company or did the sprays do the trick? Any recommendations or suggestions greatly appreciated.
