I am so sorry that you are going through this. I know how frustrating and horrible it is to live with a smoker. My husband has been an on/off smoker all his life and I have felt the same as you do.
The breakthrough with my husband came after visiting a hypnotherapist in Guildford. I can't remember his name now but the company was Life Changes Hypnotherapy. The session cost £500 but they guarantee that if you smoke again they will see you again for free. It was not a total cure, my husband gave up for 9 months, then started again (and never went back to the hypnotherapist!) but after about 5 months he stopped again and thinks that the things he learned in the hypnotherapy session really helped. When he stopped again after the 5 or so months smoking again, he used nicorette chewing gum, which he chewed for nearly a year, but has now finally ditched both and has been a non smoker for well over a year and this time I really do believe he has cracked it.
I think it is almost impossible for many smokers to give up without any help so I would encourage your husband to do something like the hypnotherapy. My husband is a real cynic and did not think it would work but it gave him a 9 month break from smoking and I do believe was the underlying reason why he has finally stopped now.
By the way, I wouldn't recommend the nhs help as my dad gave up his pipe for 5 weeks last year and then when his nhs stop smoking appointment finally came through the nurse put him on 15mg nicotene patches (despite him having gone cold turkey and managed 5 nicotene free weeks) and encouraged him to smoke Wibble tobacco! Suffice to say he was back on the pipe within a few weeks...
I wish you the very best of luck. I know that trying to make smokers feel guilty does not work as they feel guilty enough as it is. I would definitely draft in some kind of outside help and really hope that this will work for you. Keep us posted on how you get on.
