I was very interested to hear about your experience with the Emsella chair . As a Women’s Health Physiotherapist I work closely with Naked Health in Coombe SW20 where they also use the Emsella & Emsculpt . I teach the beauty therapists the structure of the pelvic floor / types of incontinence / how it can help sexual dysfunction etc.  They are keen if any of their clients book ( an expensive ) course of treatment they can have a 1:1 physio appointment with me first to discuss correct loo techniques / bladder diaries / to check their pelvic floor internally to rule out a prolapse or a hypertonic PF which can also cause incontinence  ( & they refund my consultation fee back to the client when they book their course )  this way the client gets even more help with their pelvic health problem .
Good luck with the sessions

EMsculpt Neo and EMsella Chair a review of Core to Floor at Mellissa Coupe

This time last year I received a launch email from Mellissa Coupe about their new Core to Floor technology – EMsculpt Neo and the EMsella Chair.  I was really intrigued as I had read about both in various wellbeing features in the national press and glossies and it was of course all over Instagram.

Jump forward a year and the Core to Floor treatment is proving popular with those in the know.   Feedback from happy clients is interesting.  One of the most frequent comments Melissa receives is that had they known how non-invasive, pain free and straightforward both treatments are with great results and no downtime they would have jumped on board much earlier.  With this in mind, to demystify the two treatments Melissa asked if one of the NVN team would like to give the treatments a try.   Still intrigued, but to be honest a little bit weary as I didn’t know anybody in real life who had actually given it a go, I tentatively stepped forward.

So what are The EMsella Chair and EMsculpt Neo and what are the benefits? Here’s the claims:
The EMsella Chair offers a breakthrough treatment for incontinence, pelvic floor strength, intimate health and prostate.  It is completely non-invasive.  It uses electromagnetic technology, called high intensity focused electromagnetic energy (HIFEM), to cause deep and intense pelvic floor muscle contraction which is equivalent to 11,000 Kegels in one 30 minute treatment.  HIFEM stimulates the entire pelvic floor area and helps to restore neuromuscular control.  FDA approved, it’s quick, painless and a session takes around 30 minutes.  Six to seven sessions are recommended scheduled once or twice a week for the best results.

EMScultp Neo is FDA approved, non-invasive technology that simultaneously uses radio frequency and HIFEM to eliminate fat and build muscle.  It requires no pre-treatment preparation or recovery time.  The adaptors used in the treatment emit radio frequency + HIFEM energy at the same time: synchronised RF for fat reduction and HIFEM+ for muscle toning.  The end result claims are impressive – a 30% reduction in fat and a 25% increase in muscle mass.  This is more fat reduction and muscle growth than any single gold standard product available.   A course of 4 treatments, 7 days apart is recommended for optimal results with a 3 month review and a 5th session.

Me in the EMsella Chair, mid treatment

Why am I interested?  As a mid-life mum of three, there have been times when my pelvic floor has been really challenged and it has taken time and core focused exercise, particularly Pilates, to regain strength and function – thank you Jane Wake.  Given the journey our bodies go through from puberty, through birth, through peri and then menopause looking after our pelvic floor is really important.  The mental load and juggle of a busy family life and work is enough without having to add inconvenient Ooops moments and dashes to the nearest loo.  I’ve had lower back issues for years and had surgery so I know that my core can always do with support and exercise.  Hence my interest in the EMsella Chair, particularly as you can use the chair fully clothed and there’s no need for anything to be inserted inside you or stuck on your body. In my opinion that’s a win from the get go.

What does using the EMsella chair feel like?  Difficult to describe but I’ll give it a go!  You need a wide stance sitting on the chair, so loose clothes like wide legged lounge trousers or a floaty dress/ skirt.  This will help you get into position more easily. Then it’s about moving yourself around on the chair so that you can feel the vibrations deep inside you core.   The position will be personal to you – every body is different.  The therapist will be on hand to help you find the right position and will talk to you about what you are feeling and where you are feeling it so that you get your position right. My position for the chair was seated wide legged leaning slightly forward.  The chair vibrates and you feel deep, intense surges of vibrations and a slight pulling downwards feel.  None of the rest of me shook – unlike trying (unsuccessfully) to do sit ups on a PowerPlate!  Melissa and I were happily chatting away and there was no shake in my voice or pause due to discomfort.  It was really, easy, straight forward, totally painless, not uncomfortable and I didn’t feel vulnerable or shy.  It’s a 30 min session which went in a flash. Abi, the NVN social media manager took some video of me using the chair so if you are interested do check out our Instagram next week for footage.  The course of the treatment is 7 sessions which can be taken once or twice a week with a follow up and review at 3 months.  I will let you know how I get on.

And what of the EMsculpt Neo?  I’m not tall, have got a short torso, am curvy and a 34E.  I’m fed up with the never-ending battle of the spare tyre around my middle and dread what weight gain menopause might throw at me.  I’m ok with not having a 6 pack or being the same shape I was before children.   I’ve done all sorts of exercise over the years post children including cross trainer spin 3 times a week when I was ultra fit but lost all my curves and yet still managed to have a spare tyre.  Hence my interest in the EMsculpt Neo claims that it would work on toning my middle section and melting fat whilst also supporting my core function.  That’s why the combination of the two treatments, EMSculpt Neo and The EMsella Chair is called Core to Floor.

Me in the middle of my first EMsculpt Neo treatment

So what did The EMSculpt treatment feel like?  Before either treatment commenced, I had an in-depth consultation with the therapist.  For the EMSculpt Neo we talked about my areas of concern as the treatment can be used on various parts of the body eg butt, inner and outer thigh, calves et al.  As mentioned, my area of concern is my middle muffin mum tum.  Various measurements and photos were taken in part to measure progress over the course of treatment.  As this treatment was on my middle section I was in my bra and knickers but with a lovely fluffy towelling robe for modesty and warmth.  Once comfortable on the table, the lovely Caitlin, my therapist showed me the two pads which looked a bit scary, where they would be positioned and what to expect it would feel like.  The pads are big and oval with a flat plate which comes into contact with the skin, positioned either side of my tummy button but not touching my ribs and held in place firmly with a strap.  None of this is uncomfortable or cold and Caitlin really put me at ease explaining everything as we went along.  The vibrations start slowly and then increase in intensity, depth and length.  They surge and as they build there’s an ebb and flow.  They were very deep in my lower core / lower tummy, they felt like contractions BUT there was no pain or discomfort.  I did not feel it in anyway in my back.   It felt a bit odd but not alarming or uncomfortable.  My initial reaction was to resist because the contraction was pulling deep inside but Caitlin explained that I needed to relax and let it do its thing. I quickly adjusted to the sensation.  By 20 minutes in, the vibrating contractions were super intense and quite long.  At this stage my core was tired and I wasn’t sure I could continue at this level.  I was just about to mention this to Caitlin when she explained that the really hard work was now done and that over the next 10 minutes the depth, intensity and length of vibration would lessen and ease.  And they did.  The session lasted about half an hour and Caitlin and I chatted easily the whole way through.  At any point I could have said can you take it down a notch but it was fine.

Post Treatment:  I was really thirsty after the two sessions finished and sat for five minutes drinking water before I got dressed.  I continued to be thirsty all day but I didn’t have any other side effects.  No red skin, no cramps, no seeping tiredness – nothing.  There’s was no down time either as I literally just got on with my day as planned.   Again, our lovely Abi took some video of my EMsculpt Neo session so if you are interested it will be on our Instagram feed next week.

Verdict so far:   This type of cutting edge, results driven technology is not cheap but I have to say that I am impressed with my first Core to Floor session and am looking forward to seeing the end results when the course has finished. I will keep you in the loop.
