Having given birth at St George's 2 weeks ago I can only sing it's praises. I started in the Carmen Suite which is fantastic for both pre and post natal care. The midwives are fantastic and everyone I met was caring and helpful.

Yes there aren't private rooms unless you are an exceptional case but the Carmen Suite only has 3 rooms so it is quieter than the main post natal ward.

Definitely would go back.

Great to hear so many positive comments about St. George's.
I am an NCT teacher, Natal Hypnotherapy practitioner (very soon!) and Maternity Service user rep at St. George's. There is a huge commitment to meeting women's wishes where possible - guidelines are seen as such rather than adhered to for the sake of it.
And the Carmen Suite (Midwifery-led unit with two pool rooms) is fab. As are the Homebirth team - have you thought of that?

Just to echo what every one else has said, I would really recommend St Georges too. I had both my boys there and was very happy with the care I received. It's also comforting to know that they have the neonatal intensive care unit for SW London so if you are unlucky enough to need those services, at least you are already there.

The post natal ward is hot, noisy & busy so I would definitely spend as little time there as possible!

I couldn't recommend St George's highly enough. I had an emergency ceaserian and all staff from beginning to end were superb. As already stated in is a big teaching hospital so it is very good at what it does.

The midwives were amazing and so professional. I could not fault it.

I had my 1st on the Carmen suite and thought the care was EXCELLENT! I felt the MW was really competent and really on board with what I wanted.
But be warned it is NOT a huge suite there are only 2 delivery rooms there so small risk of not being able to use it when it comes to it - no one was there when I turned up but I think a few hours later it was full and the next lady had to go on to delivery ward (not sure of its name) instead.
And agree postnatal ward was really busy/noisy etc when I was there.
(having said that I know someone who had the place to herself -it's all a bit unpredictable!)

I had my 2nd son at St Georges 10 weeks ago. I had complicated pregnancy and terrible delivery ( not down to the hospital or staff) but was so glad we had decided on St Georges. The staff were fantastic and I felt safe even when things were going very wrong and getting scary.

I would go there again if I was daft enough to have no 3.

I would also definitely recommend St Georges. I had a baby there in 2010 and will absolutely go back. I can't fault the care I received there at all. MY brother was born with a hole in his heart, and as soon as I mentioned it, was booked into a high tech cardio scan. I ended up with a c-section and the team was amazing. I think it's a big benefit that it's a teaching hospital too.

I am pregnant at the moment and am in George's. They've been fab throughout. It needs to be repainted but frankly it's more important to me to have good staff and a quality teaching hospital than a pristine paint job.

Admittedly as it's a big hospital you don't see the same midwife throughout your pregnancy, but the staff are all very efficient and very reassuring (I am quite nervous).

The appointments are also excellent, I've never been waiting longer than 20 mins. One of my friends turned up on the wrong day for her 20 week scan (baby brain!) and they fit her in anyway.

I had all three of my children at St Georges and rate it very highly. It is very reassuring to know that you have such expertise on site should it be needed. I had very different experiences with all three of my births, including one labour spent in the birthing pool (wonderful) and one induction, but I felt very well looked after each time. My one piece of advice though would be that if this is not your first child, and if all goes well, do try to push to go home as quickly as possible. Time on the post natal ward is not much fun!

Though our daughter wasn't born at George's, so I don't have experience with their delivery rooms, etc., I would say that their paediatric A&E was great last Saturday when our daughter had a pretty severe allergic reaction. They put us straight through to a doctor, without worrying about registration etc., and took seemingly very good care of her. The nurses, in particular, were incredibly kind and friendly. I have to admit I was wary of the place but was relieved at our first experience there. Not sure what that says about having a baby there but at least it was a positive experience.

I had my three at Chelsea and Wetminster. No complaints and easy access to Caruccios cafe and decent coffee. That said I know that Georges is an excellent teaching hospital. A good sign is that all the GPs at Brocklebank has their children there, so from a medical perspective it is the right choice. Adopters have said though, all NHS hospitals are stretched..

I too would recommend St George's very highly.
I am about to have my 3rd child there.

I think the key is to have realistic expectations though. As with all London NHS hospitals they are very busy with a huge staff and during the pregnancy I don't think It is unusual to see a different midwife at each appointment.

The staff however are incredibly professional and competent so what they lack in continuity of care they more than make up for in quality.

I would definitely echo the previous post and extoll the virtues of the Carman suite.

We had a great experience at st George's but were quite nervous beforehand having heard mixed reports. All appointments leading up to the birth seemed to fall at really convenint times.

We had a few referrals to the day assessment unit during pregnancy due to high blood pressure and he team were great.

I was overdue so induced in the end (given a room on our own even though it was busy) and the team from start to finish were amazing with the original midwife making a special effort to come back and find us on her next shift to meet the baby and check how we were.

Will be having my next one here without a doubt.

I'm a very big fan.

Both my boys were delivered at St George's - the first was long and got complicated, but they were brilliant, whizzed me to theatre for a successful delivery, the second was short and easy - in the amazing Carmen Suite (this is a set of delivery rooms with private bathrooms and huge delivery tubs and relaxing cushions/balls etc.) Again, brilliant care before and after.

However, as with all hospitals, it's often the luck of the draw with how busy they are when you deliver, but St George's is a massive teaching hospital and they are very highly rated.
