Stress occurs when the demands placed upon an individual outweigh their ability to cope or the resources they have available to them. Although stress is part of 21st Century life, prolonged and sustained stress not only causes discomfort in the form of headaches, backache, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and IBS to name but a few symptoms, but if ignored can also lead to serious chronic illnesses.

According to the HSE work related stress is responsible for over one third of all new incidences of illness in the workplace. Stress is now also believed to be the precursor of many chronic diseases, mental health problems and the increase in the incidence of many unhelpful coping strategies such as excessive alcohol intake, drug taking, smoking and comfort eating.

Yoga based on its combination of breathing exercises, asana practice (poses), meditation, and guided visualisations encapsulates the essence of all the techniques that can be used to manage stress and for stress reduction.

In this three hour workshop we explore the nature of stress both in terms of its psychology and biology, and work through a number of yoga based techniques that can be incorporated into everyday life to help manage and mitigate its effects. Participants will leave the workshop, refreshed and rebalanced, and armed with a number of useful techniques and a yoga programme they can incorporate into their daily routine.
