I've been meaning to post about Craig at Material Concepts for a very long time but didn't get round to it. We messed around by blind people terribly. But it has been a long time since I have come across an extremely professional, well informed about blind safety and very kind service provider.
Highly recommend him!!!

THANKS SUPERGIRL for this post. Craig is very professional. To all mums who are installing blinds, Craig is extremely up to date regarding current rules, practices and regulations regarding blind chords and installation. Check out http://www.evans-textiles.com/child-saf ... fe-blinds/ for specifications for child safety.

This does look great, but if anyone is after a cheaper (and slightly more 'DIY' option), you can also try this:

a) buy a plain blackout roller blind eg. from John Lewis - v easy to install. Fit inside the wall framing your sash window, right to the edge. This cuts around 75% of the light but you still get a little 'light leakage' around the sides and from the bottom.

b) buy a pretty blackout lined curtain, to your taste (we got ours from Dunelm Miln, but loads of people do off-the-shelf blackout lined curtains) and fit this OUTSIDE the window, on the main bit of the wall (as you normally would). This cuts an additional 15% of the light.

c) finally - and this is the clever bit - sew a little velcro tape (can buy off amazon) in 4 places: along the left side, along the right side, along the base of the left curtain, along the base of the right curtain. Then stick the matching bits along the wall where the curtain would meet them (they're clear - you can't see them). This basically 'sticks' down the edges along the sides and the base and cuts out another 5-8%.

When it's all done it's VERY dark (though not 'pitch' - IMO there is really only one way to achieve this and that's with both a pelmet and professionally lined, floor length curtains). Pretty good for an E-facing room!

The whole 'solution' cost us around £80.... plus a bit of elbow grease! :D

Just following up from my last post - after my niece and nephew totally wrecked the blind by yanking it off the runners, Craig popped over within 24 hours to fix it at and at no charge.
Craig and Material Concepts are superb and anyone suffering early risers due to summer light -he's your solution!

Can I just add to comments in previous posts on this thread . Craig fitted blinds today in my toddlers room and I am absolutely delighted. Contrary to the experience of a previous poster, Craig responded almost immediately to my initial enquiry, followed up v quickly with a quote and was able to come and fit them very promptly-a great service and lovely chap, very kind and patient with my wanna be Bob The Builder Toddler too. perhaps worth trying him again as he did say he has been really busy?
SuperGirl thanks to you too as I think you were the OP to this thread. Thanks for sharing as I can't tell you how long I was looking for the perfect solution and stumbling across your recommendation is much appreciated!

Hi!
So, Craig is not responding to my emails with a quote query...
Would anyone know a different company/ person in the area who could help me to completely black-out my kids' bedroom? (we have standard black-out blinds but it's not enough!).
I'll be grateful for any recommendations.
Many thanks,

Had mine fitted last week. Craig said it would take 7 days to notice a change in my child's sleeping pattern and he was spot on. My son used to wake up at 5.30am every morning and now it is more like 7-7.30am! Heaven!

Ditto! Would highly recommend. As per the earlier thread, Craig is pretty busy at the moment but well worth the wait of the quote. Craig and his team are great and were incredibly responsive and reliable once we agreed to go ahead.

Just had blackout blinds fitted by Craig and his lovely colleague. They are fantastic: beautifully fitted and not a chink of light!

Hi there

I am glad so many of you are enjoying their lie-in ;) so am I actually  (i can't tell you how much i love those blinds... )

Yes Craig is extra busy at the moment on a few big projects but I m sure he has or will shortly come back to you. He is very much in demand in the interior design industry but he always does his utmost (sp?) to respond and take time to everyone.

He has/is working with me on various projects, I have some friends who uses his services too, so I know his dedication and attention to details.

He is very professional.

(Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with his business. We were discussing blinds, i mentionned my issue (kids needed black out), he showed me the picture I have posted and I thought that they were so great that I felt needed to share them with the rest of you since I ve seen so many post about black out for children).

Do you mind telling who the other company that quoted was? I am also in need of these blinds but don't want to be messed around with someone spending weeks not coming back to me. Thanks!

Hi there,

I saw Craig last week - I think the extra publicity must have given him a bit too much work because I am also still waiting for a quote. He seemed like a really nice person and very very professional - but if I don't hear from him this week I will go with my the other company that quoted for us as much as I would like to give Craig the business....
