Hi there,

Your friend needn't worry about where she is staying, the council will probably just deem her friend's house as her main residency, as long as she has some kind of proof of address there.  She would then have her children placed locally to that address (depending on spaces).  If she subsequently moves somewhere else in the borough she always has the option on an in-year transfer.

As RumourMill says, pupil services are her best bet.  They are very busy at this time of year though!  It might be prudent to wait till midway through September before contacting then as there is always a bit of a churn at the beginning of term.

Thank you RumourMill, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, she doesn’t own a home here. I’ll tell her to contact pupil services - hopefully she’ll be able to get the children into school soon.

Sorry to hear of your friend's situation.

Is she coming back to her own home? As in does she own a home here? If she does then she will need proof that she is moving back into it etc. but everything should be much more straightforward.

I think pupil services would be your best bet, they should be able to explain the process. I can't believe that finding a school will be a problem but finding their first choice may very well be.

Moving Woes

A friend’s husband was suddenly made redundant overseas and she has to move back to the UK (Wandsworth) with her three children - ages 6, 11 and 14 after being away for over 20 years.

How would she go about getting them into state schools for the Autumn term, is this even possible? Would she need to rent a place to get them into schools or could she do that while staying with friends temporarily?

Sorry for all the questions but I don’t have a clue how to go about this and I’m trying to get her answers. Would appreciate some help! Thanks.
