I’ve been attending mat Pilates classes for the past 14 years, having taken it up when I was pregnant with my first child, as a form of exercise that I could still do whilst pregnant after quitting the gym. However, now my weekly Pilates classes complement the other sporting activities that I participate in across the week, whilst helping to alleviate any muscle aches and pains, keeping me strong to prevent injury, and it’s also a great way to clear the mind and create a sense of calm.

Despite regularly practising Pilates I have never had a go at using any of the Pilates machines which have risen to prominence over the past few years. Studios offering reformer Pilates classes seem to  be popping up all over the place, and I was curious to give this type of Pilates a try. So, when Thushara, a trained, qualified and experienced mat and machine Pilates Teacher, got in touch with NappyValleyNet inviting us to come and check out her studio and Pilates offering, I was delighted to accept her invitation.

Thushara has been practising Pilates for over 17 years and trained to be a teacher having seen the muscle tone and postural benefits of Pilates in her own body. She specialises in the reformer, cadillac/tower, wunda chair, spine corrector, ladder barrel and avalon equipment. For my 1:1 session with Thushara in her lovely tranquil garden studio, which is opposite Wandsworth Common and just up the hill from Northcote Road, I was going to be taken through the reformer, tower, wunda chair and spine corrector.

To begin, Thushara ensured all of my muscles were thoroughly warmed up before we hit the machines. First up was the spine corrector, which looks a bit like a barrel cut in half, and is designed to help stretch, align and strengthen the body, particularly the core and spinal muscles. Doing a series of exercises on the spine corrector particularly worked my abdominal muscles, and definitely took these exercises to another level than simply performing them on a mat. It left me thinking that come the following day, I was definitely going to feel this in my abs!

The wunda chair looks like quite an innocent piece of equipment but this one definitely gave my legs and glutes a thorough workout. Thushara explained that this piece of equipment can lead to some quite advance moves which will also work your abs, obliques, arms and sides. One for another day perhaps!

The reformer and tower are the two pieces of Pilates equipment that I was really keen to try out, to see how the Pilates mat exercises that I’m used to doing on the floor can be transformed with the addition of springs, straps and movement! You sit, stand, or lie down when using the tower, with your hands or feet hooked into the range of straps, or on the bar, which is attached to springs for added resistance. When using the bar it made me feel a little like a trapeze artist which is something I never expected to say! I love the way you kind of fly along the reformer with ease, but there’s also the added bonus of the springs adding in resistance to help intensify the exercises, compared to  performing them on the mat.

Having the 1:1 to session with Thushara was an excellent way to be introduced to the original Joseph Pilates machines. With her guiding and correcting my position and technique along the way, she made sure I really got the most out of the session with her. And I can tell you, it definitely felt like I’d had quite a workout by the end of the session, but it certainly set me up well for the weekend ahead.
