Welcome!
From my experience (I have 3 children) the older child/children feel much more rewarded if THEY choose and give a present to the new baby, rather than receiving something themselves. My older children remember which one of the cuddly toy they gave the baby even after a few years. I doubt that they would remember which extra toy they got (they actually certainly got something from the grandparents but nobody remember what) . It makes them feel special, proud and creates a first relationship with the baby whereas, for me, giving them something would rather put them aside...
but I know I'm not with the majority on the subject!
