The owners of Rayne House, the block of flats in the middle of Sudbrooke Road directly behind Broomwood School, have applied to add two storeys to its existing structure under the "permitted development legislation" introduced in 2020. This will
increase its height by 50%, be visible from all surrounding roads (including the Nightingale Conservation area) and likely set a precedent for extending other blocks of flats in the area.
As well as creating traffic and parking issues, and frankly being both deeply unattractive and dominating the streetscape of Sudbrooke and the surrounding streets, the size of the upward extension will not only generate overlooking, loss of direct and material light and loss of privacy issues for local residents, it will also create significant safeguarding issues for Broomwood School: the height of the proposed building will exceed the tree line and give flat occupiers direct lines of sight into the playground and classrooms of the school.
