Birthday present debate...

Postby nuttymummy » Thu Feb 05, 2015 10:33 am

Ok, so to be honest I'm not sure what the fuss is about re the link below......class parents have been asked if, rather than take a 'normal' gift to a child's birthday party they instead donate an amount of their choice towards a voucher so the child can get something they really want. When my son was at school btc his class did this for a good few of the birthdays.....it's win win surely as the child gets something of their choice and as a parent you don't have to find more storage for the little things (which when there are 30 in a class can mount up)! Obv it's down to personal choice and it's clear in the emails that it was not an obligation....

Hi Nutty Mummy
Thanks for posting this!

I actually ended up commenting in the Standard (oooh media luvvie!) about this story and one of the things I mentioned is I thought it was quite poor form for Mylene to share private information in a global forum.

Looks like the parents in North London thought so too...

This is so sad...I do not see the need to tweet about things like these. Perhaps she just wanted some publicity?

If she didn't want to take part she should have just binned the e mail.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with trying to collect money for a voucher instead of all going out buying 20 different £10 presents. It's a choice and nobody told her it was compulsory !!

In the end it will be her daughter who will suffer as It sounds like the mums in her class are understandably upset.

It gets worse :o

The emails are a year old!

She basically dug up some old emails to feed her Twitter followers

This is being discussed on Radio 2 right now if anyone's interested in quite an entertaining debate! (12.40pm, Friday) ;)

I think the parents asking for class group presents are totally right in being peed off.
first of all she could have just ignored the emails and got her own amazing or not so amazing present
secondly she must be out to make her daughter a no friends child with this behaviour

I think that a class group present is a good idea anyway, you end up with only one good present instead of lots of presents that won't even be opened or played with.

Myleen is a publicity seeker...........

On a similar note, last Christmas, we all clubbed together to buy our nursery staff a voucher each from all of the children rather than a gift from each of the children. Those that didn't want to just didn't contribute, no need for emails, tweets, etc.

I've never been asked to do it, but it sounds sensible enough to me. If another mum suggested it, I'd say yes. I wouldn't suggest it myself though. I don't really mind what the kids get and not everyone can afford £10. Personally I usually spend a little more so for me, it would be a saving.

Regardless of whether you agree or not with the principle, copying and tweeting it is NOT OK. I would be livid if someone in our child's class had copied class emails to other mums and used them in this way.

Plus, great way to make friends Mylene. Can't imagine anyone is going to much want to be doing you any favours with pickup or playdates!
