Woman raped in SW London park - please take extra care

Postby Annabel (admin) » Mon Oct 26, 2015 11:30 am

UPDATE: THIS THREAD HAS BEEN UPDATED LOWER DOWN WITH DETAILS OF A RAPE LAST THURSDAY ON TOOTING COMMON. PLEASE CIRCULATE AND OUR THOUGHTS ARE WITH THE VICTIM, HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

A woman was allegedly raped as she walked home alone through Wimbledon in the early hours of this morning, police have said.

Scotland Yard said officers were called by the stricken victim, 34, at about 2am.

She told police she had been raped in Dundonald Recreation Ground - a five hectare green space with tennis courts, a bowling green and a playground - by an unknown man some 30 minutes earlier.

Not that it makes it any better that a woman was allegedly raped, but I wanted to update on this. I attended a local residents meeting and the local police officers gave an update on this case. They said it was a known attacker and it was a consensual issue. There was also discussion about the park being properly locked every night which doesn't seem to happen at the moment and it's being looked into and more than one person will take responsibility for it happening.

"They said it was a known attacker and it was a consensual issue." I don't understand that sentence. Can you shed any light on that?

Yes, basically the woman was with the man before the incident, he was already known to her. The police are now trying to establish exactly what happened and whether or not consent was given.
Hope that all makes sense. "A consensual issue" were the words used by the officers reporting at the meeting.

Yes that does explain the wording. Thanks for clarifying.

Why when we receive the local police updates on this site are they not commenting on the recent spate of these hideous attacks??

It's a good question and it's probably my fault.

I did try to explain it in today's weekly email but I don't think I was very clear.

We did ask the police for their updates on the awful attacks and they came straight back to me and said that they had to be very careful about what they released into public domain as it was an ongoing investigation but they could post on the thread the same information that was already there.

I thanked them and said not to worry.

So apologies, my fault.

About the first rape reported here - a "known attacker" and "a consensual issue"
means it was not a random 'pervert', but rather someone she was with, and presumably trusted.

It's not about women being unable to walk around alone at 2am. Don't let this falsehood stop you from living your life. Most sexual assaults are not inflicted by strangers on the street at 2am. Most rapists don't randomly jump lone women; most rapists are husbands, boyfriends, friends, dates.
