Yesterday afternoon (July 4th) at around 4:10 my 10-yr old was on Wakehurst about to cross Alfriston on his way home from school when the driver of a pickup rolled down his window and told him he could cross. The second my son stepped on the road the man sped by laughing out loud and yelling something along the lines of “silly kid”.

Don’t have much of a description of the driver other than it was a man who looked “weird” and the vehicle was a black pickup with red logo/lettering.

Not sure I can go to police with such vague details but wonder if anyone might have been passing by and witnessed the incident? My son seems to remember some older kids from Belleville Wix were around but sounds like the were walking in the opposite direction.

Please warn your kids to be careful.

Shocking behaviour,if this idiot goes around doing things like this it is just a matter of time before an accident happen! I would contact the police ,we have cameras everywhere,they should be able to do something! If I was you I would also go knocking at doors of the houses in the proximity where your child was crossing as they probably have cameras and you may be able to see the truck /driver and track him down or report him to the police.

I was driving around that area at 3.45 and had 2 near collisions with idiots turning too fast into side roads without looking for oncoming traffic. I find this sort of reckless driving/idiotic behaviour is worse in hot weather - maybe it makes them feel invincible, or they've spent lunch at the pub - so I'm being extra careful while it's hot. That's a particularly nasty thing to do to a 10 year old boy!

Wow, that's so upsetting to hear about. What kind of person would do that to a small child?

I would make a phone call, it seems worth it. You have the backing of the community, we are all here to look out for each other

I would report it and with cctv being on our roads hopefully they will pick up the driver and have words, hope your son is okay.

I'm very sorry to hear about this. It's quite sinister. I would suggest that you knock on the doors of people down that road, while it could still be fresh in their minds, or while they may still have footage on their CCTV in front of their doors. Please let us know if there are any developments and I hope your son is not affected for too long or strongly.
