Video: Wandsworth woman's car rammed in terrifying incident

Postby Community Editor » Tue Mar 05, 2019 11:27 am

A letting agent in Wandsworth has described London as a "war zone", after being caught up in a "high speed chase" last week.

Claudia Monticello, 46, was parking her Fiat 500 near her home on Gayville Road on Wednesday, 27 February.

As she was reversing back, she saw a car behind her driving at high speeds. The car did an emergency stop and starting horning at Claudia.

"At first I thought it was some idiot driver. When I looked out of my car, I saw a group of youths smashing the windshield of the car that had stopped behind me," she said.

"It looked like a high speed chase to me."

As the car was hit by a baseball bat, the driver rammed into Claudia's car and drove away.

She was knocked unconscious due to the force of the collision and when she came too, she saw someone walking toward her with a metal baseball bat.

The group got into another car and drove off. Claudia said that watching footage from a neighbours CCTV camera "scared the life out of her," and she was left with multiple injuries including concussion, whiplash, and bruises on her shin.

She added: "The police did not turn up until five hours later, this is despite neighbours calling multiple times.

My boyfriend called 999 twice and an ambulance turned up three hours later.

"I was waiting in A&E until 4am and was not seen to. I have had to take time off work as I am still suffering from concussion. I have not had anything from the police. "All this crime is scary, London has turned into a war zone."

Police confirmed they were called to Gayville Road at around 6.50pm last week. No arrests have been made and enquiries continue.

Anyone with information is asked to call 101 quoting CAD6713/27FEB or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

This is just shocking. Almost unrecognisable from the Wandsworth of 10 years ago; it's the sheer frequency and intensity of crime that is difficult to comprehend. Sajid Javid should be informed about things like this.

The simple answer to this is that the police are underfunded and have taken their eye off the ball - in that they seem to tolerate low level criminality and drug use/dealing. This in turn emboldens and increases the number of people involved in crime, which escalates the whole problem.

This has been caused by central government not understanding the connection between lower police numbers and a rise in crime - highlighted by Theresa May last week.

A further aggravating factor is the failure of local government to develop appropriate policies and funding for youth engagement, whereby you effectively have gangs of kids roaming the streets, bored out of their brains, looking for something to do. What doesn't help is all this ongoing Brexit nonsense, which further suppresses any aspirations that young people have for their futures.

I have to agree with you to some extent. It doesn't help that the (in some aspects, desirable) increase in students pursuing higher education often leads to young people emerging indebted and finding no better employment than the call centre or supermarket. Criminals can't help but think they've made the right career choice by comparison, however wrong that is. The ultimate fix for the issues surrounding a spike in violent crime doesn't lie purely in an increase in police numbers, it is so much deeper and more complex. But I cant help thinking that any encouragement society and government can give to young people to become entrepreneurial - within the law - would be a good thing.
