Motorists across London are being alerted to a new parking ticket scam that fraudsters are using to fleece unsuspecting members of the public.
The scam involves an email which claims to have been sent from “HM Courts and Tribunal Service”, complete with what appears to be a genuine logo which incites people to make an online payment for a fake parking ticket– coupled with a warning that if it it’s not paid quickly the fine will increase.
The council’s head of parking Lisa Poole said: “Although the email looks genuine and uses some authentic-looking logos it is in fact a scam and people should not be taken in by it.
“The courts service would never send out this kind of email and would not provide any link for an online payment.
“If you receive an email like this you can safely ignore it.”
Anyone who receives a suspicious email of this type is also being urged to contact Action Fraud - the UK’s national reporting centre for fraud and cybercrime. It can be contacted via https://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ or by calling 0300 123 2040.
