Wandsworth Council’s plan to provide food for those on free school meals over Christmas is newly announced. The plan was publicised on the 26th November, and comprises of supermarket food vouchers for the families of children eligible for free school meals.
Wandsworth Council has a good track record with systems like these - it’s scheme back in May was the first one like it in the UK, and provided supermarket vouchers to estimated tens of thousands of families throughout the first lockdown.
The latest proposal would work in a very similar way, allowing families to redeem vouchers in their local supermarket, and making sure that no children go hungry.
Councillor Will Sweet, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, is quoted on the council’s website saying: “Ensuring children don’t go hungry whilst away from school is a key priority.” As a Wandsworth resident, it is reassuring to know that the Council not only holds values of providing welfare for all, but is taking action to ensure this end."
