Children’s lockdown activities initiative wins national award

Postby Community Editor » Fri Feb 26, 2021 2:11 pm

An initiative which gave children in Wandsworth creative materials and activities during lockdown has won a national award.

More than 4,000 children received a Create & Learn PlayKit through primary schools and food banks to help keep them stimulated.

Adrian Lester, who was a judge in the awards, said: “Direct, impactful creativity delivered straight to the young minds who will have charge of our culture in the future. The view that this was done with an eye on digital poverty is a massive bonus.

“This kind of project isn’t a one off experience or tied to a certain location. The impact of the work done here goes home with the kids. I am very happy to hear they want to continue the project and work with artists and more schools in 2021.”

The project won Best Arts Project at the National Campaign for the Arts’ Hearts for the Arts awards, and was co-created by creative organisations in the borough and Wandsworth Council.
