Role profile: Teaching Assistant PURPOSE The postholder will be responsible for supporting children in their learning under the direction and guidance of Form Teachers, Specialist Staff and the Phase Leader and to provide for the social, educational and welfare needs within the school. KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES 
  • To support and uphold the school’s vision and values
  • To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake work/care/support programmes
  • To carry out any other reasonable tasks in keeping with the post as specified by the Headteacher
 Support for Pupils
  • Supervise and provide particular support for pupils, including those with special needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans and Personal Care programmes
  • Establish constructive relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs
  • Promote the inclusion and acceptance of all pupils
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher
  • Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence
  • Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under guidance of the teacher
  • Have regard for the need to safeguard pupils wellbeing by following relevant statutory guidance along with school polices/ practice
  • To run a range of interventions to support individuals and small groups
  • To support children’s emotional development and resilience when approaching learning tasks
  • To support children’s behaviour in line with the school’s vision, values and positive behaviour policy
  • To assist with children at the beginning and end of the day and in the playground as required
  • To make ongoing observations and assessments of children’s progress and contribute to children’s reports and parent meetings where appropriate
  • To develop activities to promote social interactions between pupils during break times
   Support for Teachers
  • Support the class teacher to maintain a stimulating and safe learning environment by organising and managing the physical teaching space and resources
  • Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals
  • Assist with the planning of learning activities
  • Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupil’s achievement, progress, problems etc.
  • Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour
  • Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers
  • Administer routine tests and invigilate exams and undertake routine marking of pupils’ work
  • Provide clerical/admin. support e.g. photocopying, typing, filing, money, administer coursework etc.
  • Liaison with external support providers (eg OT, SALT) to ensure informed decision making can take place on interventions/ provision
 Support for the Curriculum
  • Undertake structured and agreed learning activities/teaching programmes, adjusting activities according to pupil responses
  • Undertake programmes linked to local and national learning strategies e.g. literacy, numeracy, KS3, early years recording achievement and progress and feeding back to the teacher
  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils’ competence and independence in its use
  • Prepare, maintain and use equipment/resources required to meet the lesson plans/relevant learning activity and assist pupils in their use
 Support for the School
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Be aware of and support difference and ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • Appreciate and support the role of other professionals
  • Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required
  • Participate in in-service and external training and other learning activities and performance development as required
  • Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson times, including before and after school and at lunchtime
  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher
  • To assist in the general care of the learning environment by keeping curriculum resources in classrooms and around the school, tidy and in good order
  • To implement and promote the school’s equal opportunities policies at all times, and to value diversity
  • To support the school’s wide range of extra - curricular activities
  • To administer first aid or carry out simple medical procedures and record actions
  • To attend and contribute to all school meetings as directed by the Headteacher

  • To demonstrate a personal commitment to safeguarding and student/ colleague wellbeing
  • To ensure any safeguarding concerns or incidents are reported appropriately in line with policy

 PERSON SPECIFICATION Essential
  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent relating to Early Years
  • GCSE or equivalent in English and Maths
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent pupil management skills
  • Ability to break concepts down and deliver them to support teaching and learning
  • Plan, prepare and deliver outstanding learning opportunities to provide students with the opportunity to achieve.
  • Knowledge and understanding of current framework for teaching and assessment.
  • Evidence of good classroom practice
  • A commitment to the safeguarding and protection of children
  • Hardworking, organized, creative and a team player
