Spin class but someone on their phone throughout class

Postby GymSituation » Thu Nov 14, 2024 8:03 pm

I do spin at a SW London gym and I love it. This week we had a situation I wasn't sure how to deal with and I'd love to know if I'm being a bit cranky and old.

The person on the bike next to me was on their phone through most of the class. I mean picking up the phone, typing and then putting the phone back and then doing it again. Probably 30 times in whole session. It was that often. As the spin class room is dark it was really off putting, the glare was like if you're in a cinema and someone is on their phone then.

Normally I'd say something but the weird thing here was that the person on the phone was on a bike directly in front of the instructor, like 2 yards away. So I wondered if there was a reason they hadn't said something and so I'd be out of order to say something? I did wonder if it was a family emergency but then if it was you'd think they wouldn't in a spin class.

Forgot to add, when they were on their phone they stopped cycling. I looked at their mileage at end of class and they'd done 2km. Seriously. That's like a tenth of what a normal person would do. At one point I wondered if I was on a hidden camera show it was that.

Just looking for guidance on whether I could say something without being a weird person in the gym.

I understand how annoying that is . I used to attend a gym where the women used to yack through the class , talking over the teacher and just generally being annoying and rude to others . I used to think if they could talk that much they clearly weren’t working hard enough. I finally dis say something and it didn’t go down well : the entitled don’t really accept criticism.
What I suggest is if you see her again, get a bike far away so she doesn’t annoy you . It may have been a one off and emergency but if it wasn’t and she does it again , mention it to both the teacher and the manager after the class is over . Let them deal with it , that’s what they are there for .

It’s definitely annoying but each studio is different. At Pyscle they are very strict about this and all phones should go in the locker. They also dont let people into class if they are even 1 min late.
When it’s more of a general gym with a class, they are usually much more relaxed so im not sure if they will enforce anything but maybe just encourage it.

Did the intrusctor not do anything? I'd expect them to "police" the class...

Maybe have a word with the instructor or the gym reception if it happens again? I am a yoga teacher and always ask students to put phones away. It tends to be policy in most spaces, but worth finding out what the gym policy is.

"Maybe have a word with the instructor or the gym reception if it happens again?"

I think that's the best approach.

We'll see if it happens again this week.

Thank you all.
