Wandsworth Prep: Preparation for 11+

Postby WandsworthPrep » Fri Sep 14, 2018 4:39 pm

At Wandsworth Prep, in Years 3 to 6, we sustain our emphasis on breadth and balance, ensuring that children enjoy their learning, whilst being mindful of the necessity to prepare them for the important senior school entrance exams they take in Year 6.

The preparation towards 11+ is gradual and supportive, placing our knowledge of the individual child at the heart of the process. It does not involve non-stop cramming and coaching; instead, children are taught the ability to use and apply knowledge and to have well-honed exam technique through exposure to a variety of practice papers. Alongside the development of a growth mindset, this fosters a sense of resilience and confidence to approach the process with realism and composure. We aim to develop happy young people who have the confidence and learning skills to cope with the demands of whichever senior school they move on to.

In Key Stage 2, we continue to teach the same subjects as in Key Stage 1. Children learn to analyse their preferred learning style and develop their thinking skills, in order that they become more critical and efficient learners.

Children begin their preparation for verbal and non-verbal reasoning examinations in Year 4. Preparation is subtle but effective. Thinking skills afternoons, workshops and access to online reasoning games ensure that preparation is gradual and not stressful.

Discussions with parents begin during Year 4. Emphasis in discussions is placed on a holistic picture of the child. We aim to provide professional advice and help your child achieve their best.

Our first cohort of Year 6 leavers are a testament to how successful preparation for 11+ is at Wandsworth Prep. Aside from being offered places at some of the finest schools in London and the South-East, feedback from senior schools has been how our children approached the various components of the entrance process with confidence.
