Where to get a secure front door? European homologated steel doors or cheaper alternatives?

Postby SouthLondonDaddy » Sat Nov 02, 2019 11:57 am

We're in the market for a front door that is, ideally, slightly more secure and resistant than the typical British wooden door you can smash open with a kick. It's for a house, so it doesn't need the fire certification that doors to flats probably need.

Steel doors are common in many European countries; there is, in fact, a European homologation system, with doors certified level 3 resisting 20 minutes to certain attacks (hammer, drill, etc), level 4 ca 40 minutes, etc. It's impressive stuff compared to 99% of British doors.

We have found a distributor of Italian doors in Imperial Wharf: http://www.kensingtonsecuritydoorsandwindows.co.uk/
They quoted ca. £5k for a level 3 door that would look like a typical British wooden door from the outside.

That's a lot, but then Banham quoted £7k for a security door which seems similar but has no European certification, and £3k for a wooden door with a thin metal sheet which the lady said covered only part of the panels.

So Banham seems incredibly overpriced for what it is; ideally we'd want some kind of compromise between the Italian security door and the typical British door, something like a steel door without certification, but which looks like a wooden door and maybe costs in the £2- £3k range. There wouldn't be much point in spending too much for a bulletproof door, when a burglar could still enter from the windows or the door to the back garden (we have an alarm with a very visible shield as deterrent).

Any suggestions?

I have heard very contradicting feedback about rockdoors.
Solidor's range doesn't seem bad but that's only wood, no reinforcements.

I have found a few other steel door resellers, but they only seem to do ugly doors that wouldn't fit in a Victorian house.

Do you live in a Victorian house?
Probably no point getting this kind of heavy duty door when the windows can equally be kicked in instead.
The wooden doors you refers to don’t have to be as easily kicked in as you make out.
You can install a London bar which enforces the hatch and have special hinges and metal bars that hold the door on place when closed so not as easily kicked in.

I think good locks ( 3 not 2) and security camera is a deterrent enough in general.

Yes, it's a Victorian house. I agree it doesn't make sense to spend £7k on a bombproof door unless you also spend many tens of thousand of pounds (which we wouldn't do, it would be insane) on the front windows, back garden entrance, etc.

Still, I am not convinced the traditional wooden door is that secure, and I'd like to understand if a more reasonable compromise exists.

It would be nice to have a good door not just for security, but also for better insulation from the weather and the noise. I'd say that in about 90% of the Victorian homes I have seen, the front door was not straight, and let in lots of draught and light from the sides. I know there are people for whom Victorian must mean dysfunctional (I have seen people specifically installing single-glazed windows in an expensive refurbishment because it's "more charming"...) but that's not me.

I have found these ones - I'll contact them

Most burglaries don't happen via the front door. You have probably already done this, but it's a good idea to identify all the weakest security points around your house - back doors, alleyways, garden walls and fences, flat roofs, windows, etc. Our bottom sash windows are painted closed. In our old house we were advised to seal closed the fanlight above the front door, too.

We were told that the best thing is to give people reasons not to target your house in the first place: letterbox covers, alarms, security cameras, doorbell cameras, movement sensors that trigger a security light. Also, drawing curtains at dusk so passers-by cannot see TVs and laptops. I heard about window alarms the other day - am going to look into those for our house.

Of course you want a secure front door, but also one that looks attractive and suits your house. There are wooden doors and wooden doors. I recommend the London Door company. They are expensive, but not as much as those you have been looking at and the quality of the product and the service is very good. They can incorporate a steel plate into the bottom half of the door to prevent it being staved in, also the London bar, hinge locks, 3 point locks, Banham locks, & co. Also internal bars across stained glass sections and/or laminated glass.  It would be easier for someone to get in by breaking a window than all of that.

I agree with others.
Kicking in doors isn’t a usual burglary method.

There have been a few burglaries reported on our street whatsapp group over the last couple of years and none of them involved a door being kicked in

So if Victorian wooden doors are easy to kick in, burglars either don’t know or don’t care

Picking sash windows, picking door locks, smashing back windows and letterbox key thefts (fishing rod through the letterbox to retrieve a handbag left near the front door, take the keys out, get keys, let yourself in) were the methods used on our street.

We got a new door from London Door company a few years ago, primarily to solve the draught issue and its brilliant.
Very solid wood, 3 Banham locks, a London bar, double glazed glass and lots of draught-proofing around the frame

Unless you are a drug dealer or member of the Italian mafia , why do you even need a high security steel door again ? You don’t ! Just use a Victorian door that. 99.5% of London use and get Banham locks for £500 .. Job done .

Just don’t use the London door company , they will charge you £3-5k for a door you can buy and install for £1-2k elsewhere .
