Kids Ski wear

Postby Mellomumma » Thu Jan 09, 2014 12:27 pm

Hi, I am just wondering if anyone could help steer me as to where I can buy kids ski wear that is not too expensive. My daughter who is 3 will be on skis for the first time this season so she will need proper attire but she is only going out in the mornings for a few hours. How do you find the balance between keeping them warm and value? Is it ok to buy 1 size bigger? Or am I just better paying? I think it is important to get good thermal layers but not so convinced with the jacket and pants, or am I wrong? Would appreciate any advice, experience or help.

I've always used H&M ski kit for the kids, and have been really impressed. Look at ebay too as have had some good buys from there. Mine are tall but I buy the correct age, as I tend to layer them up with fleeces etc. Primark do good thermals and long johns, although they don't always have them in stock, and I've found my kids some bargain fleeces and snow boots from Lidl!

Good tip from boojackson - had no idea Primark did thermals.

A friend who is a keen skier recommends Muddy Puddles for kids' thermals. I got tonnes there last year in the sale, as well as ski socks. I borrowed salopettes and snow boots (it's amazing what people have lying around - worth a post in Annabel's Arcade), bought a very good quality ski jacket (a year up, but to be honest, too big) from TK Maxx and a secondhand all-in-one from a Mum on nappyvalley. There is some really good secondhand stuff available (probably because it's barely used, they grow so fast!)

Try to make sure you take a couple of hats, a neckwarmer and def a couple of pairs of gloves because as you know kids will soak those (and lose the hats!) and stuff is so expensive in the resorts. Decathlon is good for basics, too.

If you go skiing in France you will see that the vast majority of children wear Decathlon ski wear. These are good quality, good value and you should find everything you need.
You could go to their London store - Surrey Quays, Canada Water (quite a pain to drive there but worth it - I'd recommend that you plan to go and buy everything you need in terms of sport equipment for the year) or online (although it's definitely better to try on).
We normally manage to use jackets and trousers over 2 winters; for trousers they have a system of adjustable leg length which is fantastic! I think when my son was 3 we bought size 4 years and he used them when he was 3, 4 and even 5 at full length!

I heard about a second hand ski shop near us too - I haven't been but will be planning a visit soon!
The website is http://www.skiderouge.com/

Ski De Rouge is meant to be fab and they buy them back from you when the kids outgrow them. I also saw good ones in TK Maxx.

You might try Little Adventure Shop (www.littleadventureshop.co.uk). It's possibly not the cheapest option but brilliant kit and it's all high quality (and the owner is incredibly helpful). Their sales are good.

Ski Bartlett in Uxbridge is a one stop shop for everything ski. It's a pain to drive to as not around the corner but well worth the trip. They have sale areas in the shop so a bargain can be had. We've just returned with our 4 yr old, it being his first time.
I bought his onesie new online from mountain warehouse (cheaper than tk maxx) which was superb for the weather (went down to -5) and got his thermals cheaply from a sports direct shop which were ridiculously cheap. I got his turtle neck 'scarf' from ski Bartlett and didn't regret it at all. Much easier than real scarfs.
Only change I'd make would be to get him long mitts that secure around his wrists rather than end at the wrists. His only protest during the week was getting snow in his mitts!
Have a lovely time!

Hello,

I apologise for the late response to this and wish I'd seen this earlier. Thanks to those who recommended us!

Please do visit us if you still need skiwear for your 3-year old. We have everything from very warm thermals, gloves, etc. to outerwear - either one pieces or separate jackets and trousers. We sell new and second-hand skiwear so are very competitively priced.

Although it is of course important to ensure you have warm thermals and base layers, we think a warm jacket and trousers are also key, and they must be waterproof, not only water resistant.

If this is too late, we hope you had a lovely holiday and your daughter enjoyed her first ski trip! :)
