Just to let people know, we were one of two burglaries on Broomwood Road in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Same story as before, front sash window forced and lock broken off. We have no hedge at the front and a very obvious alarm (which annoyingly we hadn't switched on), and Broomwood is obviously a busy road, so we were surprised this happened.

They didn't take much - cash, a packet of ham (!), and a few bottles of champagne. Also tried but failed to steal the car.

So just keep an eye out and make sure your sash windows are as secure as they can be.

I wonder - how did they know the alarm was not switched on?

Where I'm from (Stateside) the police actively patrol the neighborhood using a side patrol car spotlight. They cruise up and down streets slowely looking for burglaries in process as well as any suspicious activity. If they find people in the area who look like they're up to no good they will stop to ask questions and "help them" find their way out of town.

I'm curious to know why it doesn't seem as if the police do anything to prevent these burglaries. I've never once seen officers on patrol (foot or car) BTC. I would think a little physical presence might help deter some of this nonesense. Do the people here need to pay more in taxes to deserve that kind of service?

To echo the previous post it would be good to know what pro-active steps the police are taking to try and prevent these burglaries. I have seen a few police cars driving around during the day but do wonder whether there is actually any police presence during the night when these burglaries are taking place.

I don't understand how these people have been allowed to get away with so many burglaries in this area without being caught. It would be good to get some reassurance from the police?

Dear NVN,

Firstly apologies from me.

I meant to post this link that the Battersea Neighbourhood Policing team sent over to me and I didn't  It should be v helpful.

Advice regarding security of sash windows is here:

http://content.met.police.uk/Article/Si ... 0011143975

We should also be assured that the team are conducting more patrols in the area in response to these crimes.

Annabel

Again apologies that I didnt get this helpful and reassurung information up sooner.

Annabel x

Attempted burglary today at lunchtime on Broomwood Road; the guy was trying to get the front door open with what my neighbour (who caught him in the act) described as a "green plastic thing". Police came within 10 minutes and couldn't find him, but said it is happening multiple times a day in our area. They are certainly stepping up police presence at night, which is reassuring. Not sure about day times as I work full time, which is why I am so grateful for vigilant neighbours! Weird that they seem to be consistently stealing ham!!

Thanks Annabel. That's a really helpful guide. It actually just made me realise that we have sash stop locks on our windows, so i'll be locking those up pronto!!

Hi. I read on one of these posts that the police are holding a meeting tomorrow night at the Eagle. If that's correct, and anyone is going, would you by any chance be willing to post what they say about keeping safe, their increased presence, etc.? We have plans that we can't really change and so won't be at the meeting. There's been a lot of good advice on NVN and it would be great to hear what the police say. Many thanks!

This parallel thread explains in more detail how thieves are opening the sash windows and also talks about a police briefing in the Eagle at 8pm tomorrow.

Does anyone happen to know whether in the instances of burglars breaking in through sash windows and using them like cat flaps whether they had shutters fitted as well? I'm wondering if by having shutters acts as a deterrent as it would appear to be harder/noisier to force open a window that had shutters behind?

There have also been a number of break ins / attempted break ins on the Heaver estate over the last couple of weeks. We've had several notes through our door from Police and I know two neighbours affected. Neither of my neighbours had shutters - I wonder whether shutters would also deter burglars as they can't see what there is to steal?

Would be good to know what the police say at the Eagle.

Also, if anyone know if there are Heaver estate initiatives too then that would be good to know. This level of burglaries is really scary - I've started taking my bag, laptop etc upstairs at night.

Not sure that shutters make any difference

Hi there,

We were broken in to on Monday morning (6am!) - through the ground floor sash, same method as mentioned before.

We have shutters fitted and I think they gave us some time - I disturbed him before he could get in to the house but could see that he had been trying to force the window inwards but hadn't got past the shutter frame. So, I think they make it more difficult perhaps but don't seem to be a deterrent necessarily. We've since fitted additional window bolts to prevent any leverage and are implementing some additional security measures.

Sorry to all those who've been broken in to - it's such an invasion.

Jane

Sadly I didn't catch a glimpse....I'd turned the lights on as I came down the stairs and that scared him off (referring to 'him' because when I was saying he/she to the police, they assured me it was a male!) The police told me on Tues that an arrest had been made but it seems more have happened since then from these posts.

Yes, fingers crossed they catch all involved soon.
