What to expect from the first midwife appointment?

Postby Sessa84 » Sun Jan 26, 2014 9:56 pm

Hi All
I was just wondering what I should expect from my first midwife appointment. They wrote it should last about 2 hours... wow... what do we talk about in two hours?

Thanks!

I wish i had taken a more relaxed approached, i was quite stressed because i told work it would take 2 hour and told them what time to expect me back based on that however it was much longer then that.

At Georges with my first they took a urine sample/ chatted through a medical history of me and my partner and our families and then I had to go and get bloods (a wait of one and half hours) then go back to the midwives, it was a long day.

At Thomas' with my 2nd they were more accurate with thier appointment length and they have their own clinic to take and analyse the bloods very effectively.

so in short the 2 hours is some chatting but mostly waiting around, depends which hospital

At Clapham Manor, I had to do a urine test on arrival and then the midwife went through the health history/background and did some blood test. I did not have to wait at all. The appointment lasted just over 1 hour. It was the same for all my pregnancies.

Don't forget to ask for your FW8 form to apply for free prescriptions and dental treatment and I also hear it gets some perks on public transport but never tried it.

Thank you all. My Gp organised the form for me and I have already got my maternity card.
My appointment is next Tuesday morning and I am really looking forward to it!
