Should this be banned?

Postby RachelRay » Thu May 15, 2014 12:37 pm

Hey guys, In a nut shell I read a book brought on Amazon. "Divine Dreams" by Lady E. It's about Amanda, a spoilt 17 year old virgin girl who craves her busy fathers attention. Living in Wandsworth, London, she has visions in her dreams.

I found this book "sexually offensive," The central character is fraught with social and psychological issues. Divine Dreams book, which has for me stirred up offensive language and religiously objectionable content as bits of the Quran was used to describe heaven and then some characters have intercourse there. (I am Christian and my husband is a Muslim convert) Which I believe is an inappropriate sexual reference. Also the main character who has lost her mother to rape and murder, I feel secretly glamorises suicide attempts. I do t want to come across as a complainer but with the recent suicide and depression rates in Wandsworth, and around the world I believe this "New Adult/Young Adult" book is immoral and scandalous as it glorifies intercourse outside of marriage and is also blasphemous.  :o

How do I go about trying to get a book banned?

Here is the link to this book:

It's fiction!

plus 'it glorifies intercourse outside of marriage'

...if that sort of thing is so important to you then why were you reading the book in the first place?

Many Shakespeare plays contain scenes of violence, rape, incest...would you have those banned too?

Do you know why the UK is a democracy? Because books, ideas, etc are not banned or censored.
If you re hurt by this book dont read it and more importantly you shouldnt have bought it as you just gave money to the author, the publisher and the distributor.

I'm trying to figure out whether you're the author trying to (badly and misguidedly) promo your own book or whether you're genuinely offended. If you're the former, Twitter, Facebook and other social media works a lot better than trolling a message board.

If you really did buy it on Amazon, I'm confused as to why it's not ranked (as in Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #300,843 Paid in Kindle Store). That suggests to me that it hasn't yet had a sale on Amazon.

Also, this is self-published. The clue is on the Amazon page where it says: Publisher: CreateSpace Independent Publishing Platform (8 May 2014). Quite possibly no editor vetted the book before the author self-pubbed, and certainly there is no publisher standing behind it. (Note: I'm not saying all self-published books are bad. There are great ones out there, and some fantastic authors, but you can get some real dreck as well.)

Now, if you REALLY want to complain about this book that "glorifies intercourse outside of marriage" and is "blasphemous" then go ahead. But don't hold your breath for a ban.

It's the same brand new poster that complained about paint on clothes at nursery!

I brought the book as I thought it would be spiritual. As a Christian I like to read diverse Godly lit and the named "Divine" Dreams suggested that it fell into my usually category of books. (I really was sold a dream) My question was SHOULD it be banned? I understand we have freedom of speech but to a certain degree right. But judging by your comments I guess it should not be banned. The reason why I was so upset with this book is because it was pro suicide, which is a subject dear to me. also "young adults" may get their hands on it, that was partly my main concern.

I dont want to come across as someone who complains a lot but I do not have all the answer in the world, and I'm not the bravest person so I felt the need to ask and share.

Thank you

If you find it offensive stop reading it!
Nobody forced you to keep going to the end put the book away just like you can turn off your tv if you don't like it
Thank god for free speech

Surely the same free speech you all mention gives the original poster the right to ask the question on a forum such as this. I'm quite sure when she posted she wasn't expecting such harsh answers. Be nice people!
