Highview primary school

Postby ValentinaRebe » Wed Oct 15, 2014 10:01 am

Hello Mums!
My daughter is 3 so I need to start applications for the school. I had a look into preview posts here about Highview which is basically opposite from where we live (10 meters maybe?) but didn't find much said publicly. Everyone shared experience on PM!
The council very likely would give us this school with no much options I guess. Me and my husband were considering moving as well to get closer to HW or BV where we heard great comment and experiences.
Can you please give me some feedback about Highview if you have, the one I heard so far were not that great :(

Thank you very much for your help!

High View is a good school. My daughter attended the nursery class last year, but moved for reception because we moved out of the locality (where we were renting), to buy somewhere which we could afford. She was very happy there, and made great progress. I was reluctant to move her, to be honest, especially since she'd made such a lot of friends, but I didn't want an epic commute to school on top of other family and work logistics.

I strongly recommend you visit the school to help you decide. Have a look at the OFSTED dashboard etc, too, and look at their great results. Worth bearing in mind that it is also a feeder for the Bolingbroke Academy, if that's not overwhelmed with siblings by the time our kids reach that age ;-) There's a lot of hype around schools in this area, but what you need to know is that the overwhelming majority in the Borough are doing a great job.

Thank very much both of you! It really helps hearing good feedback and experiences. We were not considering the school at all so far but I will ask for an appointment and will visit the school.

Hi there,
I'm a very happy High View parent. I prefer to answer specific questions that you might have over PM/email, as everyone has very personal needs/thoughts about schools and my personal experiences may or may not be relevant to you/others so I see little point in broadcasting them to the world! I will say that my son, in his second year at the school, is thriving, loves going, has good friends and is progressing well academically and socially. It was our first choice school and we have no regrets.

There are open days next week: 21st October 9-11am for nursery and 22nd October 9-11am for reception. I would recommend going to one of these. If you can't make it, ask for a tour and to meet the head. They are usually happy to do this.

If there's anything specific you're interested to know about PM me and I'll respond.

Hello

My daughter started nursery this year at Highview, so far it’s a very positive experience.

Nursery teacher is very proactive and always actions my numerous requests. The other day I dropped my little one off and was hanging around for her to say to me “okay mum you can go now”. So she has clearly settled in!

Just back this morning from a positive parent meeting with the head teacher, she is clearly trying to drum up parent interaction with the school.

I live just off Northcote, so it’s a little bit of a trek for us. To be honest I was considering doing the whole renting out our home to rent closer to BV, for now I’m glad I haven’t.

Hi,
My son started reception this year and we are very happy. The teaching is excellent, they get a book to read every day while in my understanding in many of the other schools including HW and BV the children get about one a week. The parents are really motivated to support their children's learning and we've made some lovely friends there. I understand the school is also experienced in supporting expats - e.g. children who come from European countries aged 6 where they would be in reception, are placed in year two and the parents have commented how good the school is in helping them catch up. The classes are small, 18-20 children which gives them all lots of individual attention. The discipline is good. There are apparently lots of after school clubs for reception children which start in the spring term, in addition to the pre-school and after school child care. I also heard on the grapevine that when Ofsted visited in spring or summer 2014 they verbally told the school that as a whole it has 'good' rating but reception and Year 1 are outstanding.

The most important thing when choosing a school is for you to feel you're happy with your choice, the best is to visit and consider! I hope this helps - good luck!
