What a heartbreaking story - there seem to be plenty of people out there wanting to prey on the elderly and vulnerable. I saw a piece in last night's Standard about this very thing - http://www.standard.co.uk/business/mone ... 37802.html

It has a Citizen's Advice number. As its a new campaign, rather than the long-running (not much happening) issue of the door-to-door 'fishmongers' we've had in Nappy Valley, your mother-in-law's story may get some attention and action.

Why is it that anyone would buy fish from a door to door seller anyway? If someone called to your door selling meet or vegetables would you buy it? It seems quite strange in my opinion, there are plenty of local shops or god forbid, supermarkets that sell fish which is guaranteed to be fresh.
I do hate seeing stories of elderly people being conned or intimidated in their own homes (or indeed anywhere). It is sickening.

These guys are back - just had a knock on the door (we're in the Nightingale triangle).... also when I opened the door (I was in the front room so he couldn't see me coming around the corner) the guy was clearly checking out the seals on my front door, and running his hand down the length of it. Couldn't see any mark afterwards but it was all very 'fishy' (sorry).

Agree with previous posters.... let's stick together, politely decline these door-to-door sellers and support local businesses instead. Moxon's is excellent, and the new deli (Volker & Quinn) on Hildreth Street (opposite Balham Waitrose) is also very good for fish.

And keep an eye on your front doors while you're at it....

@ harrisjonesxms, how awful for your MIL, these guys are bad news & I'm sorry to hear that they are a) back & b) more aggressive than ever.

I agree that they should be reported to the local police, daily mail, Radio 4 & what ever else we can think of.

Not sure about Wandsworth but many streets in Lambeth are now 'no cold calling' zones. Unfortunately not many people seem to know this. I'm always pointing it out to my neighbours who are surprised. Check your lampposts for signs.

of course lots of traders still ignore the signs but, at least, it means you can threaten to report them if they don't leave.

Just a thought - maybe we could try and get van number plates to pass on to local police, it would help to track down these people via the DVLA, and can possibly be obtained from more of a distance or indirect contact (if someone is sure it is a van selling the frozen fish).

Just a quick note to update this thread.

While there are many legitimate door to door fish sellers out there, I would be grateful for notification of any concerns over particular sellers especially to the more senior members of our community.

I can confirm however, that one company , Paul's fisheries, which has been mentioned on this site, are correctly accredited by Sunderland Council and checked by them.

The Police cannot recommend any one firm but if you have concerns about any company please let me know so it can be assessed and enquires made as to the legitimacy of the company.

We are currently reviewing the information in conjunction with the Council Trading Standards and Community Protection Departments and would be grateful for any company names, vehicle indexes or telephone numbers that are being used.

Have a great New Year!

Thanks so much mungomuffit and great to meet you! I was really pleased with how the launch went - it was an interesting group of people, who either like supporting small, independent businesses, believe in sustainable food systems and local food or just love super fresh fish, a real pleasure chatting to everyone. I've attached a pic of my two littl'uns who came down to help. I hope people will post pictures of their culinary creations to the Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/pages/Faircatc ... 6658791516 and we will be offering fish preparation workshops very shortly so NVNers please register your interest on the web site to be kept informed. A great many people have been incredibly supportive of our venture and these include Inma Goodhew from the Old School Club http://www.theoldschoolclub.co.uk/ - A lovely creative hub for hand-made enthusiasts and crèche at Battersea Business Centre, Philip Bullman at Bullman Booth Estate Agents and Vicky Kostura at Rights Management International.

Hi

Has anyone tied Faircatch.co.uk? Local and supremely fresh. Nothing frozen here, and we know exactly which boat it came from and the name of the man who caught it.

You can collect from Barmouth Kitchen at the moment - a lovely little cafe by the west side of Wandsworth common - but if enough people register interest, we could set up another collection point in SW11.

Thanks

Ilona

In the prevoice months i've gathered information regarding the bogus door to door fish sellers from there frequent visits as i have fallen victim to them before.
Northumberland Fisheries were back last week,an older chap this time aged around 55 to 65 with a speech impediment asked me if i would like some
fresh fish from northumberland while i was pruning my shrubs.
Firstly as i replied no to the gentlemen i noticed they had removed half there sign off the side of there vehicle.
A White van, long wheel base van,Ford, registration 08 or 06 with yellow lettering along the side saying only FISHERIES now where as before it clearly stated NORTHUMBERLAND FISHERIES along the side.
I've lost there registration but they have called in this street on numerous occasions in the past so when they come back i'll post it.

Now a blue Ford Transit, registration T577 AGU van with white lettering was around about 7 weeks ago parked in the street while his colleagues
was cold calling door to door.
I approached the chap at the back of his van and showed interest in what he was selling,he showed me a selection of fish which was presented
in packets which was packed by North Quay Fisheries.
He was very pushy in offering bulk buy only which varied from £200 upto £700 for the frezzer with a selection of fish of my choice.
I then asked what payment would be acceptable and he replied cash or cheque and all cheques are to be made payable to satchin limited.
I then made it quit clear that i only wanted a piece for tea and he became very agitated so i said good bye but what startled me was the name
SATCHINS LIMITED as i recently stubled across another article invovling another fish scam.

When you sign your name on a cheque, you are signing a contract,Your signature means that you "endorse" the cheque, which is to say that you are vouching for the trueness and creditworthiness of the cheque, and that you assume full responsibility for the cheque plus any fees if there are any problems with it.
Never make a cheque out to a third parties or blank as this is a sign of money laundering and you are only supporting the criminal underwolrd and you could be held accountable for any unlawful wrong doing.

Please take the time to read the following links of just of some of the horrific incidents involving fish sellers up and down the country.
Whats also very clear is that the further north you go the bigger the problem is with door to door fish sellers praying on the elderly.
There are 100s of post relating to this problem and trading standerds and police are working together to put a stop to this criminal activity.

So when you have a knock at the door and your asked if you would like some fresh fish, just think about these poor souls and say NO.

DO NOT BUY FISH FROM DOOR TO DOOR CALLERS AS WE DO HAVE REPUTABLE FISHMONGERS IN LONDON

HOOK LINE AND SINKER....
North Quay Fisheries have recenlty been involved in yet another incident
affecting another victim in the elderly community this year in wigan.

http://www.wigantoday.net/news/local/co ... -1-7133166

After reading what i could of the labeling i was able to trace the company through various company checks.
The previous company was owned by Peter Kinniar at 4 Pow Dene Court,North Shields Fish Quay,North Shields NE30

The company then swapped ownership on the 22 December 2014,Darren David Bankhead became the registered owner and started trading under the name North Quay Fisheries at the same above address.

Once you start to read recent posts and other articles on the web it's clear that this organisation is backed by the criminals where it's money laundering, changing persons cheques, robbing the elderly but the same names keep popping up over the years at the same address Northumberland fisheries, satchins and now North quay fisheries

It's a common act for conmen to swap ownership of a company once it's been named and shamed and it's also harder for the local authorities & police to control.

North Quay Fisheries is a scam avoid like the plague

It's great that Bob bruce, Doodle Dee and Wandsworth crusader are highlighting the unethical practices of these cowboys. Quite apart from this (notwithstanding it is disgusting and shameful behaviour), why on earth would anyone buy "fresh" fish from North Shields when London is an hour away from the Kent, Sussex and Hampshire coasts?
This is another good reason to sign up to a fish-box scheme like Faircatch where there is complete traceability from boat to plate and we can tell you when your fish was landed, who caught it and how.... We support our day-boat fishermen on our closest coasts and our record for freshness is getting fish landed at midday on Friday to our members by 3.30pm. That is fresh, what supermarkets call fresh really isn't

If you live anywhere near Barmouth Kitchen (SW18 2DN), I hope you'll try us out. Failing that please like our FB page and share some of your posts to help spread the word.

By supporting Faircatch, you are helping enable a fairer, sustainable, local food system, while enjoying the freshest fish in London!

Thanks,
