Looking for Nursery in Balham Area

Postby FromNYCtoBalhamMum » Wed Jan 19, 2011 11:33 am

Hi

My daughter is 16 months old and I was wondering if there were any nurseries in the area that were part of the day and only 2 or 3 days of the week. I am a stay at home mom, but I think my daughter would love to have the chance to socialize with other children in a school-like atmosphere.

Thanks

Hi
Are you looking for an educational nursery or a day case nursery?

Big difference in what I'd recommend.

I'm the same, stay-home mum, but wanted my son to spend more time with peers. He has just started at Woodentops day nursery on Thornton Road. He does 3 half days so they definitely offer part time places. They have a baby room from 6mths, then move into toddlers. From 30mths, they can also attend kindergarten for more structured learning.

So far, and it's early days, it's going really well. He has lots of fun and seems to love the carers - they get kisses goodnight when I pick him up.

I've spent a lot of time looking at nursery's as a full time mum working near Clapham South tube. We started at Teddies Balham but although the staff were lovely they were obviously unhappy themselves with too many personnel changes (4 managers in 3 years). Although it's a bit further than you're looking, my two are now at Nightingales Nursery which is hidden away at the back of Francis Xavier College (Malwood Road SW12) and love it. It's a family atmostphere with just 3 rooms and incredibly friendly - and the staff are all a bit older and have been there for a while. The pre-school room where my son is good prep for school.

I am very happy with the two nurseries that my girls attend. I too am a stay at home mum but thought my girls needed some more stimulation and to make friends. My three year old has been at Noah's Ark on Endlesham Road for five terms now and I could not be happier with it. My youngest is due to start there in September, when she will have just turned three, so until then she is attending the Wainwright Montessori on Chestnut Grove. They take children from two. I really recommend it as a lovely home from home with warm, friendly, happy staff. I am very pleased with both nurseries. They offer quite different environments so I would visit both and decide which sort of atmosphere you are after. Good luck.

Sorry, I just read that your daughter is only 16 months so sorry if my post isn't relevant to you. Hopefully it will help someone else who is looking!

No Worries Cornish Mummy! She will be 2 in August so she could start in September - Thanks for the recommendation as I live quite close to the Wainwright Montessori.

My son is at Marmalade Caterpillar on Boundaries Road and my daughter will start in September. They have to be two to start.

We absolutely adore it. I really can't praise the staff enough. From day one my son has been excited about going and runs in with a huge grin on his face each morning.

Think the waiting list is long though.

I certainly know lots of families with children happily at Noah's Ark, Wainwright and Marmalade Caterpillar. I know a couple at Woodentops too, but I don't know them as well. No experience of Teddies, I'm afraid. We're really lucky, there are SO many good ones in the area. A lot depends on the waiting list and how you feel when you visit it really. Good luck.

My son started Second Steps nursery when he was 20 months and absolutely adores it. You can really see that he is learning there ( singing alphabet, counting on his own etc) while as the same time, having a whale of the time. He kisses all his carers good bye every evening, and is desperate to go every morning, so can't really recommend it highly enough. I know they do morning and afternoon sessions, and is on Ravenslea Road. Good luck with your search.

What do you think of Teddies Balham?

Postby Rsmom » Fri Oct 14, 2011 9:54 am

Hi, do any of your babies currently go to Teddies? I started a few settling in sessions and am not hugely impressed but maybe i am overly concerned. Any thoughts would be helpful
thanks
