Reasonably priced family photos?

Postby szerma » Tue Jul 28, 2015 1:18 pm

Dear NVN-ers,
We used a photographer last year who came to our house for a photo shoot with all the fancy equipment, and then gave us all the digital photos plus enhanced 10, for which we paid £250.

Can anyone recommend someone more reasonably priced around Nappy Valley? We would be happy to go to a studio or a park as opposed to have it in our home. Would still like to have around 8-10 digitally enhanced photos.

Many thanks,
M

£250 seems a very reasonable price to me. The photographer came to your house and used no doubt very expensive equipment then would have spent quite a considerable amount of time doing the post production. If you think £250 is a lot for all that work maybe you should take the photos yourself. If they're not as good as the professional's maybe that's because the pro is trained so you're also paying for their investment in both time and money in learning to take good pictures.

You'll always get someone who will be willing to work for less - but generally you get what you pay for and photographers who charge low rates just make it harder for other photographers trying to make a decent living out of what is becoming an increasingly undervalued profession.

Sorry to be so negative when you just asked an honest question but I don't think Nappy Valley netters should be under the impression that £250 is a lot for all that work and skill. Try going to Venture if you want to see what some photographers charge!

Thank you for your response. I actually found an older thread on here which listed many options. There are some which charge only around £150 and some which would cost several hundred more. I agree you get what you pay for - the beauty and artistry of the more expensive ones was completely different from the cheaper ones.

I guess we felt that for the £250 the photos were nothing special, and now that we have a toddler, we would be happy to travel to a studio rather than do it in our house. The lady who did it was only a budding photographer.

I think we found an alternative, once we have gone ahead and are happy with the result, will post a name here.

I would like to take photos every year so we have a family "history", but I don't think I want to spend £300-£500 every year! Maybe in a couple of years' time when our finances improve.

Best,

M

Ok fair enough if you thought they weren't very good. Good luck with it and good for you for wanting to take pics every year. When the kids are grown up you'll have a great set of photos to remind you of those precious childhood years. So many people never get round to doing it and kids grow and change so quickly - the years go by in a flash.

I love you! Indeed photography is undervalued nowadays, it's not just a click of the camera. Unfortunately some "photographers" are undermining the market. True, you usually get what you pay for...I would advise to find sessions for free if you are not expecting excellent pictures, at least you won't have had to pay for a bad job. Xx

Yes, you definitely get what you pay for. Photographers giving you all the photos for £250 are crazy. Cameras are expensive and it is not only the time taken to take the actual photographs but the "unseen hours" it takes to edit the photographs.

Im a photographer and I think my pricing is affordable. You do get what you pay for in regards to quality.

You can look at my website: http://www.kimberleymillerphotography.com

When choosing a photographer (regardless of who you choose) please look through their entire gallery. Look for consistency, look for that magic that a good photographer should be able to offer. I get so deflated when I see parents pay for images they could easily take themselves.

Look for a photographer that can capture your babies in a way that you can't. Images that turn your milestones into art.

Try Julia Boggio or Venture for a price comparison, upwards of £1,000 per session, we have used both :)

I have to agree with Dudette - it's so hard to charge less than that and keep a roof over your head and food on the table when equipment costs tens of thousands, and things like insurance (necessary in this day and age!), equipment maintenance costs, travel costs, editing costs, website hosting costs, etc are factored in. I started off charging less, because I think family photos are something everyone should have, but, ultimately, I was paying to work & it wasn't sustainable.
I'm glad you have found someone to fit your budget & style now though! There's lots of choice around here, so you will never struggle to find someone :)

We used a lovely lady from http://www.magicrainbowphotography.com a few months back and we got a great selection of images from our session. Her prices are reasonable and considering all the nice photographs we got from the day it was money well spent.
