Where can I buy really good vegetables?

Postby SJ1979 » Fri Jun 03, 2011 5:18 pm

Odd question.. but does anyone know where I can buy really good veggies? I'm a bit fed up of the quality of supermarket veg, and their tasteless tomatoes in particular really get to me! Are there any good greengrocers / veggie stalls anyone can recommend in around SW11 area / Northcote Road / Lavender Hill? I've tried Riverford, but would like a shop or stall I could visit rather than a box delivery.

Many thanks.

I'd also love to know this answer. I'm getting sick of spending £25-30 pw for crappy, old supermarket fruit and veg!

Bumping the post!

We buy fruit and veggies from the stalls on Northcote Road (by Gail's). They are there on the weekends and I can't remember whether they are there on other days (I think possibly Friday for both and fruit is there on Tuesdays). We just like supporting local traders and buying from friendly faces (particularly Ted and Barbara on the fruit stall!).

Not a budget option but Whole Foods on Lavender Hill have good stuff. At the weekend there's usually lots of free samples too so you can try before you buy.

There's also lots of fruit and veg stalls on battersea high st every Saturday morning.

I just remembered - slightly further afield just off queenstown rd on silverthorne rd there's a really good greengrocers. The name escapes me just now but should be easy to find - it's at the traffic lights by broughton st.

Thanks so much, I will definitely try the greengrocers off Queenstown Rd, I am sure I've seen a sign for them when passing that way and wondered if they were any good.

I like the fruit and veg stall in Hildreth St, Balham market place. It's so much cheaper than the supermarkets - sometimes even half the price on stuff that I have price checked. You do have to use your own judgement a bit, as some things seem to hang around a bit but mostly it is so much fresher too, having been bought that morning by him from the wholesalers.

I literally have just been having the same thought, especially as i'm weaning my daughter and want her first taste of fruit and veggies to actually taste of something! I haven't received my order yet but i have placed an order with this company as their stuff is supposed to be yummy. Its coming on Friday - can't wait!

It is all organic so therefore not cheap but i think it is cheaper than Whole Foods, which in my opinion is the next best option. Fingers crossed it is really tasty - if so i will be hooked!

I've been using Abel and Cole for over a year now and LOVE them. The veggies taste wonderful (especially the tomatoes). The only drawback is because they are organic, they tend to go off a little quickly. So plan to eat what you buy within the week. They deliver in SW11 on Fridays. I cannot recommend them enough, and their service is superb.
At Christmas, I had gone through and made my order but neglected to hit send. The phoned to make sure I hadn't made a mistake just in case I missed out on my Christmas groceries.

I always buy my fruit and veg at Borough Market...

But guess that's a bit far away ;)

Another vote for the stalls on the Northcote Road from me. Lovely fresh fruit and veg and you're supporting local traders!

I used to use A&C but found it a bit variable. That was years ago, though, I should give them another chance.

Not had much luck with Hildreth St, got some very ropey stuff. Stopped trying when I asked if he did unwaxed oranges and he had no idea what I was on about.

I bought some fruit from the Northcote Rd stall today (£1.20 for 4 nectarines!) I told the chap on the stall that he had a recommendation on NVN. He hadn't heard of this site so I told him all about it and he was very grateful to the people who had posted about his stall. His fruit is delicious, strawberries and raspberries much more tasty and cheaper than the supermarket. I often walk away with a large bag of things for around £5.

That's really good to know about Northcote Road vegetable stall, will definitely try it out, always a bit wary of places like that in case you are stung on price, but good to know it's good value.

Thanks everyone for your recommendations.
