At Nightingales Doctors, we've recently had a few Mums getting in touch to ask about the BCG vaccine now that it's being offered to babies in some parts of London. We thought that we should share what we know to help you to make the right choice for your child.
The BCG vaccine is now offered to babies who live in areas that have a higher than average rate of TB, those who will be staying in countries with a high rate of infection, and for those whose parents or grandparents come from a country with high rates of TB. It can be given at any time from birth. The injection is given into the left upper arm. As most of us of a certain age know, after the injection comes a scab, sometimes it can get infected, and eventually a scar. The vaccine is given slightly differently to the usual childhood immunisations. It is injected into the skin rather than the muscle which is why it forms a blister and the skin changes are seen.
TB is becoming more common in the UK and treatment usually involves a long course of antibiotics for 6 months. However, the risk of catching TB is mainly limited to those falling into the groups that are currently being offered the vaccination.
If you choose to go ahead with the vaccination for your baby, this can be arranged through your GP or health visitor on the NHS.
If you would prefer the flexibility of a private service, GPs from Nightingales Doctors will visit you at home to give immunisations at a time that's convenient for you. Please do get in touch if you would like to find out more and take advantage of special offers for Nappy Valley users. We look forward to hearing from you.
