Pushchairs on flights

Postby mummy_dani » Fri Jun 24, 2011 10:44 pm

Hi

I'm off on holiday (long haul) at the weekend and don't really know what to do about a buggy. I have a bugaboo chameleon which I use every day but I also recently bought a really cheap stroller which I leave at my little ones nursery when he's there. Anyways, I'd ideally like to take the bugaboo cos it's more comfortable for my baby and it'll be better if it rains or if it's super sunny as I have all of the covers/ parasols etc. However, I was reading the BA website and it says I can take a fully collapsible buggy and car seat free of charge. The bugaboo isn't fully collapsible (just the base). I don't want to get to the airport and BA try to charge me more money for checking in the bugaboo.

Does anyone have any experience of taking bugaboos on a long haul flight with BA? Oh, and I'm flying cattle market class whilst my hubby is up front as his flight was paid for by his work!!! (Another issue yet to be resolved!!)

Thanks

I've taken our Chameleon on lots of flights, all short haul though and mostly with charter airlines, but have never been charged extra. So my assumption would be that BA will definitely allow a Chameleon under their normal pushchair allowance. To be safe though you could always ask your husband to check it in as he'll get a larger allowance.
One word of warning though, don't put the brake on. I did on a flight from Egypt and it got broken, fortunately was still in warranty so it was repaired, but it was a hassle.

I have done long hauls with a bugaboo many times - never had a problem. I have always had my son in it right up until boarding and they take it off me and put it straight into cargo. It helps to fold it down for them though as non bugaboo users are easily floored by how to collapse it.

My friend is a BA shorthaul pilot and he said that their shouldn't be a problem in finding a space for the buggy. Often on short-haul they are able to fit the buggy in the flight deck and/or the cupboard at the front. If your hubby is flying business class i really dont forsee their being an issue with putting the buggy in the club or first class wardbrobe.

He told me that the pilots and the crew will always try and accommodate parents and their buggies. If it wont fit on the plane they will take it from you at the aircraft door and put it in the hold so it comes out at the baggage reclaim at the final destination.

This is of course as far as he knows, I hope it is a bit of help. The best of luck with the flight and have a great hols.

Warm Regards

Ali

I flew long haul on BA over Xmas. I had a Bugaboo Bee and it was no problem. They take it from you at the gate. I had to collapse it so had to hold my son and all my stuff to my seat but BA was extremely helpful and accommodating (I was by myself), with the flight attendants carrying all my stuff for me to my seat. As your husband is flying business class I'm sure everyone will EXTRA nice to you all and it should be no problem.

As the person above mentioned though you get your buggy back at the luggage terminal so you will need to carry your lo.

If the chameleon does not fold totally down in one piece (can't remember!)I would just phone BA and double check that there will be no issues (or that they put a luggage tag on both parts of the buggy).

Hope you and hubby will get to trade seats for some of the flight... !
