Local group set up for tactical voting and vote swapping to achieve a second referendum - Remainers please read!

Postby GuyD73 » Sun Nov 24, 2019 1:23 pm

Anyone use Next Door? Here’s how to use it to encourage tactically voting and vote swapping to Stop Brexit.

So here’s my latest Remoaner wheeze, and I hope I can encourage a few of you who use Next door to do the same.

I’ve set up a group called “London remainers voting tactically or vote swapping for a second referendum” (please join!), the purpose being to educate and explain about how tactical voting works, how it’s perfectly legal to swap your vote in one constituency, for another vote in a different constituency, and how you go about it. The ultimate aim is to achieve a hung Parliament, a second referendum and a remain outcome. You should be able to search for this group easily if you're in Northcote rd area, Tonleys, Wandsworth Common etc.

For those not on Next Door, when you join, you’re part of a small local neighbourhood, mine has 1,288 households in it. But when you post you can reach a number of other similar hoods adjacent to yours and when you add all of those up, you get 12,400, and to put that in perspective, that’s getting on for 18% of your average constituency of about 70k. That is a serious number of people you can influence. Now ND have pretty strict rules about political posting (I’ve just come off a two week ban). You can advertise a LOCAL event, like a march or hustings, but you can’t make any comment that’s likely to engender a wider debate about a national issue, ie Brexit. However, you can invite all 12,400 of those people into your group and within it, you can say whatever you like.

I thought I would approach EU nationals to join the group first, both because I thought they were one demographic group very likely to be narked at Brexit and also because that same group may not be very familiar with how our first past the post system works. So by googling and asking friends and fam, I found out some of the most popular Christian names of French/Spanish/Italian/German/Polish people. Once your group is set up, you can ‘search by name’, and you get a list of people with that (or very similar) names, that you can then invite to your group, with a note explaining what the group’s all about.

I’ve only just set up my group, so no idea how well this is going to work, but it doesn’t take long to do, and strikes me as a great way of getting the tactical voting and vote swap message out there. Lots of brits have no idea you can vote swap and many mistakenly think it’s illegal (it’s not), so this needs debunking widely.

When you first apply, Next door (I think) need to post you a code to verify that you live where you’re saying you do. Given Christmas post season coming up, if you’re not already on it, I’d apply pronto.

One final point, useful as it is, Next door will never be a patch on the FAB Nappyvalleynet community, just feel we need to use every tool at our disposal.

De rien. Thousands of us really value the ability this site gives us to connect, support each other, ask questions, organise and advocate. There is inevitable conflict, but you guys do a great job managing it.

Apologies, forgot to include a link https://nextdoor.co.uk/g/gwghqi36q/?is=tophat

I should also apologise for the mistake in my original post. I was labouring under the misapprehension that EU nationals with 'settled status' could vote, but it turns out they can't, which I think's outrageous. No taxation without representation and all that. I personally think any EU national who's been living and working here and paying their taxes for a couple of years or more, deserves a vote and I feel enormous sympathy at their disenfranchisement.

Still, this doesn't mean they are entirely without agency. They can still discuss tactical voting and vote swapping with their (sometimes British citizen) partners, neighbours, friends and colleagues, so can do much to spread awareness of what we can all do to move us towards a second referendum.

So....., it's working!

The group is only at 85 members but loads of engagement and we've already achieved several vote swaps and there are many more in the pipeline. I'm looking for green voters particularly who are keen to make their vote count for more (I have willing labour swappees in Caroline Lucas' constituency in Brighton). Have we got any former tories reading this (possibly holding their nose) and voting lab for the first time? Get in touch because a vote swap with a constituency in Devon/Cornwall gets you a remain seat down there via a lib dem too. win win.

it's all to play for...

Maybe after the election you could post how many votes you managed to swap and what the outcome in the relevant constituencies was (ie what impact it had).

If you live in Wandsworth or Lambeth you're wasting your time.

Love London for better or worse it is the only place I'd want to be in the UK
I didnt bother with the vote swap.
The FPTP discussion does need having. I remember debating in favour of it way back at school. We have a very flawed system and Guy, that could be where we should be pouring our energy into.
Hope one day we have a refreshing, compassionate and liberal leader like New Zealand's and that these strong men and populist clowns will be dust one day. Having a media which isnt so right wing, biased and toxic would help too. Perhaps the next generation. Mustn't give up hope.

Couldn't agree more with everything you say Starr, I'll absolutely be campaigning for https://www.makevotesmatter.org.uk/ above all else, because we won't get sensible politics until we have PR, and we're in dangerous constitutional territory with this govt, fricking power grab.

Oh for a leader like Jacinda Adern, what a legend, on so many levels.

So Denwand and SW11er, I swapped alot of votes into Putney to help Fleur, so win there, and likewise into Richmond park, win there. Proud London voted #remain again, and more people voted for remain parties than brexit parties nationally. Brexit has no mandate, just a beneficiary of a deeply flawed electoral system.

I'll relish watching this government fall to bits :)

London did not vote to remain last week. It was a general election. It voted for Labour. The referendum was in 2016.

London is mostly Labour and Remain.
Also, most under 35s overall voted Labour than Tory and are in favour of Electoral Reform.
Had we had a PR system I'd have voted Green.
