Cake help needed for daughter with egg allergy!

Postby SJ1979 » Thu Aug 18, 2011 8:47 am

My daughter is about to turn 3 and for her birthday party, all she wants and talks about is having a purple birthday cake with pink candles, her two favourite colours. She also has an egg allergy, meaning cakes are generally a nightmare from past experience. I've tried a few recipes out, generally a chocolate one using vegetable oil which was OK. What I'd like to know is, is there a cake maker out there who might be able to make an egg free cake, complete with purple icing - or anyone with any ideas about how I go about doing such a cake without it looking like a total car crash!!?

Sadly most shop bought cakes are out of the question as they all have egg in!

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hi,
I live in Tooting and whilst I walked the high street(Mitcham Lane off Tooting Broadway) at the weekend I noticed a new shop had opened specialising in eggless cakes! Didn't realise such a thing was even possible but it must be and they may be able to help? Don't know what they are called but the front of shop is pink.
Have a good day.

Hi, I have an egg, dairy and gluten allergy but love baking. You can buy egg replacer from Whole Foods on Lavender Hill which means you can bake as per normal but use this product instead of eggs... says how to use it on the packet

Hope this helps

We've been recommended The Caker Crusader by our son's dietician (allergic to dairy, wheat, eggs and nuts).

I haven't used them yet and their website says they're closed for holidays until 22 August but looks like they do a good range of birthday cakes.

Try www.sweetthings.biz, based in Primrose Hill but they will deliver.

They made a lovely egg-free chocolate cake for my son for his first birthday when he was allergic to egg at the time. They were happy to do things quite bespoke for us so I dare say they would do purple icing if you wanted.

Best to call and talk to them about what your requirements are. They have won some 'great taste awards' for their cakes.

A friend of mine moved to Singapore a few years ago her youngest son has a severe egg allergy. She has set up a website called sneezy wheezy which has all sorts of information about allergies (lots of information from specialist pediatricians) There is a recipes section on the website and I'm sure there is an egg free cake recipe, I think made with courgette.

www.sneezywheezy.com

Also their facebook page:

I'm sure Vicky wouldn't mind if you emailed her asking for a cake recipe. Say that I recommended her site.

Thank you everyone for all your advice. I've spoken to Sweet Things in Primrose Hill and they were brilliant, so helpful and are making my my daughter's cake, which sounds amazing!

Thanks again!
