How to get him to give up smoking!!

Postby tvmum » Tue Aug 30, 2011 9:09 pm

My husband has been a smoker all of his life ( he's now 61). He had a heart attack 2 years ago and his sister died of a heart attack a year ago. He gave up smoking the day he was admitted to St Georges -- but I've recently discovered that he's started again. I am absolutely devastated -- have pleaded with him to stop; even our 8 year old has asked him to give up again. In a tearful (my tears of course) heart to heart he told me how he slipped back into it and accepted that he would stop again. I've told him to stop of Sept 1st ....but don't know how to handle it now. He's one of those very stubborn people whom nagging doesn't help. I told him I'd rather nag him to death than see him smoke himself to death.
Is there anyone out there with any tips/ideas etc? Its not like he doesn't know what he's doing to himself...its a real addiction. He's kept it from our friends but I'm wondering whether "outing" him might help
I'm not one to post personal stuff on forums but am kind of at wits end.

I am so sorry that you are going through this. I know how frustrating and horrible it is to live with a smoker. My husband has been an on/off smoker all his life and I have felt the same as you do.

The breakthrough with my husband came after visiting a hypnotherapist in Guildford. I can't remember his name now but the company was Life Changes Hypnotherapy. The session cost £500 but they guarantee that if you smoke again they will see you again for free. It was not a total cure, my husband gave up for 9 months, then started again (and never went back to the hypnotherapist!) but after about 5 months he stopped again and thinks that the things he learned in the hypnotherapy session really helped. When he stopped again after the 5 or so months smoking again, he used nicorette chewing gum, which he chewed for nearly a year, but has now finally ditched both and has been a non smoker for well over a year and this time I really do believe he has cracked it.

I think it is almost impossible for many smokers to give up without any help so I would encourage your husband to do something like the hypnotherapy. My husband is a real cynic and did not think it would work but it gave him a 9 month break from smoking and I do believe was the underlying reason why he has finally stopped now.

By the way, I wouldn't recommend the nhs help as my dad gave up his pipe for 5 weeks last year and then when his nhs stop smoking appointment finally came through the nurse put him on 15mg nicotene patches (despite him having gone cold turkey and managed 5 nicotene free weeks) and encouraged him to smoke herbal tobacco! Suffice to say he was back on the pipe within a few weeks...

I wish you the very best of luck. I know that trying to make smokers feel guilty does not work as they feel guilty enough as it is. I would definitely draft in some kind of outside help and really hope that this will work for you. Keep us posted on how you get on.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this approach is too holistic, but accupuntcure for smoking cessation is offered by a man called Mark Kiely in The Awareness centre on Abbeville road. He recommends an initial treatment of 90 mins (£75) followed by 3 one hour treatments (£50 per session).

I'm hoping my other half will agree to go and see him after our wedding in September, no excuses of stressful situations after our big day!

Such a tricky situation for you all. Fingers crossed for you that you find the best solution. Wissam Awad does hypnotherapy for stopping smoking in Balham. His number is 07540548828 and he's wonderful.

My husband was a heavy smoker - he finally gave up after reading the Alan Carr book on how to quit.

Allan Carr - it all makes sense when you read that book. Please try it, get it on audio download if he won't read it - play it whilst he's asleep!

The British Association of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis is a non-profit making charity. All the practitioners on their referral list are health professionals or academics. Hypnosis is an excellent tool for support to stop smoking but it's success is affected by the degree of genuine willingness to stop.

I have helped hundreds of smokers quit using a combination of hypnotherapy and counselling. If it done properly it only take about two hours and the results for most people are really good.

£500 is a lot to pay when a really good and very experienced person would normally only charge between £140 and £175 in the London area.

Charging high fees and offering free treatments if it does not work is frowned upon in my professional body (British Society of Clinical Hypnosis and the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy)
We are told not to do this and that you should charge the right price for the treatment and should not double or treble the price for marketing purposes.

Who ever you see it is worth asking if they will record the session so you can listen to it again at home during the first few days or at any time in the future if you are under pressure and feel tempted to smoke. Also check if they are full time or part time therapists and how long they have been helping people stop smoking as you do not want to be their first client. Also make sure they are in one of the main bone fide professional bodies as there are many bodies that sound good but have no credibility and are just for marketing.

I use Hypnotherapy to help people get off alcohol and hard drugs so helping them stop smoking should be no problem for more people. If you need any more info please email me on christopher@thepeelclinic.org.uk
