Do we have rights to see the exam results after 11 plus.

Postby sande » Tue Jan 17, 2023 3:24 pm

Hi I am just wondering if anyone has been able to see their child's 11 plus exam result? the school in question is Emanuel.

Way back when I got feedback from Dulwich College. It wasn't exact results, more a general impression of how he had or in actual fact hadn't done :-) Not sure if this helps? You may have already had this?

I'm in the same boat as you.
My child did the 11+ there last December.
I called them up and would not give exact results, all they said was "we take siblings that achieve atleast 55%."
Which is strange because 11 years ago when my other child did the exam there. We got the full results in the acceptance/rejection letter.
I think it is a way of parents never truly knowing what percentage the child would need to get, as it changes yearly.
I hope this helps.

I had exactly the same problem with Emanuel a few years ago. While both Dulwich College and Trinity spent ages on the phone with me explaining how my son performed and yes, giving me his exact scores in DC case, Emanuel just sent a letter basically saying they "can't provide individual feedback so don't even bother calling". Ironically, they are also the only school not providing any SEN support and not welcoming to SEN candidates, from my experience. Despite having a letter from NHS consultant and private Ed Psychologist, they were the only one out of 5 school that didn't award him 25% extra time recommended by both professionals.

My experience of the Emanuel process v all other schools has been poor.  Observations
- one of the admissions team is particularly cold and unhelpful
- they "forgot" to allocate my child a laptop for the test day
- they do not appear to welcome any SEN candidates (certainly in case of pupils who do not have a sibling at the school)
- they are not forthcoming in giving feedback in contrast to DC and other schools who take the time
- on the day of the tests the children were nearly an hour late coming out - it felt like a conveyor belt
I have 3 children who have all done the process including one in December 2022 and with mixed outcomes.  My eldest child was offered a place at Emanuel but we felt the DC process was more thoughtful and considered the child more holistically and he ended up going there.  I would push for more clarity on your child's results.  You have paid a not insignificant admissions "fee" and I am sure the school can do better (if you are being brushed off - it is not clear from your post if this is the case).

Our child also didn't get an offer for 2021 entry. It wasn't a huge deal as it wasn't our top choice and we had other options. Our prep head warned us not to treat Emanuel as a back up as its very verybpopular. But I think it is very poor of them not to give feedback.yes I think the only school that doesn't. We won't be putting younger child forward for this school as a result but many seem to like it there. For us it's a school that's quite baffling in terms of who they accept and reject and no feedback is given.
If you've paid the exam fee and put your child through this they ought to give feedback otherwise why even take their entrance exam seriously? What is teh exam fee for if there is noone they've employed to give feedback.

I am also baffled by their admission criteria. Our son got offers from Kings and DC but not Emanuel. No explanation given.

We also have friends who have a brilliant clever but dyslexic daughter. During the open day, they were openly discouraged from applying. She was not given extra time and, surprise surprise, didn't get in. I think their attitude to SEN is frankly outrageous. How can other brilliant and more academic schools accommodate SEN students and still have amazing results? But they can't?

@emmablues - i tend to agree.  Whilst it is a very popular school in terms of admissions numbers, the process itself creates a bad impression or at least it did for us. Anecdotally they appear to have an approach of trying to take the highest performing students in the tests (plus most siblings if they are not in this bracket) presumably in the hope this will result in a cohort who perform the best in the public exams in years 11 and 13 but to the exclusion of any children who have any SEN provision who as you rightly point out can and do make a big contribution at other very high performing schools.  The impression is just not a good one and feels pretty arrogant.

If this is how they approach neurodiversity, it doesn't speak much for their ethos and surely filters down to other things too. What a sad way to raise young people while the world is making massive steps in terms of accepting all kinds of diversity

You wcan make a subject access request for the data under GDPR. You can do this on behalf of your child if they are not competent to make the request themselves - look on the Information Commissioner’s website ‘ What rights do children have?’

The year my daughter sat the exam, they massively messed up one of the papers, it wasn’t photocopied properly so they had to stop the children, move on to another paper and come back to the paper they’d messed up once they’d photocopied another batch. Total shambles, I understand mistakes are made but it should have been checked.

Luckily it didn’t phase her but I can imagine for many kids it would have been very stressful. She got a place but it wasn’t our top choice- interestingly the year she sat I know a good 10-15 families who turned it down.

I had 2 kids do the entrance there and asked for feedback for both after the offers went out. One kid was offered a place at 10+ and they shared an overview of which papers they performed best/worst in but not specific marks. For 11+ last year (didn't get an offer initially) they gave their specific marks for each paper. The grade boundaries change year on year so knowing how your kid scored ahead of offers day probably isn't that helpful. Hope all goes well!

Hi All,

I am Emanuel mum, not posting under my usual address, it's a great school in many aspects with strong academics, sports, music, clubs and outreach, it's fast paced, hard working and ambitious, also friendly and my child has some excellent inspiring teachers and made great friendships.
However, I have to agree that their position on SEN/Learning Support is very disappointing, outdated in its knowledge and practice and not at all inclusive, school policies are ancient and not protective of the children, I would even say dismissive.
For everything that is said around mental health, the Learning Support is a let down, and as a school there is definitely a barrier on entrance to SEN, that I know from experience other schools do not put out.

I was really surprised, as I thought schools in major cities were now catching up ND/SEN.

From what I have seen, the boys' schools generally provide better support to SEN and others.

I really hope they done have the trust status...? No school discriminting against SEN should be allowed to be a trust...

I actually spoke to Emanuel about their SEN provision. It was shocking. I specifically asked if any of their students had an EHCP and the response was “we had one of those once, and it wasn’t without it’s problems”.

I was so shocked that a person who is supposed to be supporting SEN actually said this about a child.

It was a categorical no from me at that point.
