Hi,
I am not an expert, but have been developing my own skincare formulations, so I probably know more than the average person. You are unlikely to get serious results using something over the counter, so if you are wanting something more intense you will need to go to a skincare specialist, not necessarily a dermatologist, but a salon which is able to sell the more powerful stuff. Nothing over the counter is going to give instant results though, or dramatic results in a week, like the claims! Your skin simply doesn't turn over that quickly and the product would have to be so powerful to achieve anything instant, that you wouldn't be able to buy it without prescription or from a dermatologist. However, things that are known to work are Retinol and Hyaluronic acid, but you absolutely must start on the former gradually and always use an SPF. If you want to go more natural, then Bakuchioil is an alternative to synthetic retinol and gentler. AHAs are great for a light resurface, which is always good for ageing skin, but just introduce those gradually too.. The most expensive products are still full of water and additives and very small amounts of the active ingredients, so price is not an indicator. I think people would be horrified to know that the lead ingredients in that very expensive.... 'The Sea' cream, are bi-products from petro-chemicals!, for example! I know people really think the Ordinary is good also the Inky list, Neal's Yard. As you say, there is so much out there, it really depends on what you want to spend and how natural a product you want.
I don't want to recommend a particular brand as I am not qualified to do that and everyone's skin is different, but the essentials are a good cleanse, but not one that leaves your skin feeling tight, a toner or spritz to add hydration, a serum to increase hydration and add actives, then your moisturiser which seals it all in, or a facial oil, then your SPF for daytime.
If you want to find out what is in each product, the INCIDECODER website is a great resource, which I find rather addictive.
Good luck!
