Advanced swimming classes (not squad training)

Postby sid_seal » Fri Aug 11, 2023 3:39 pm

Hello,
My pre-teen has been attending swimming classes at Active Lambeth centres for a few years, and last spring he has been “promoted” to the advanced course.
Active Lambeth (and Better before them) do not use the standard Swim England stages, but having had a look at the competencies he is probably working towards Stage 8 award.
However, he is not particularly enjoying the course, as it seems very much focussed on increasing their speed without working on the techniques to do so; most sessions involve swimming lots of lanes but no feedback from the instructor. The same happened whenever they had a substitute, so I don’t think it’s just this instructor’s style, but a combination of programme and class size. Although I would like him to continue swimming, I am beginning to understand his frustration, so I am trying to find alternatives before he falls out of love with the sport, which he used to enjoy.

Does anyone have any experience of advanced courses at the Places for People centres (Balham, Tooting) - or of any other local courses of similar level? We are not aiming for squad training, but just at improving his technique and giving him a bit of fun challenge.
Of course I’d also appreciate hearing from people with different experience of Active Lambeth advanced courses in case it is the instructor after all! Thank you!

Leander Swimming Club - Academy (teamunify.com)  You could try pre squad at a club - lots of technique work

Thank you Goldhawk - that would have been good but unfortunately he's too old!

Hi

Our Son did swimmers lessons with Cindy’s Swim school. They have a really good focus on technique in their lessons all the way through the different stages.

We are in a similar spot. Too old for pre squad training and not quite there for squad training...

If you do find a something, would be keen to know.

Thank you Swim Dad!

Hi Falconmum - I don’t know if your child did formal Stages or not; anyway, both Balham and Tooting have classes for all stages (including the advanced 8-10) in groups of up to 10 children. My son tried it last week, and he was much happier - nothing to do with the group of 30 he was in before!

Did you contact Leander and they said too old?

Ignore the suggested ages on their website - they really don't apply especially post covid when lots of kids missed the opportunity to swim
