Going rate for babysitting?

Postby bettyboom » Fri Nov 13, 2009 12:27 pm

Does anyone know what the going rate is for Babysitting, when you don't use an agency. I have a junior colleague at work who I am going to start using to babysit, but have no idea what I should pay her. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Hi there,

It does seem to depend on experience but I have found that teenagers who live closeby ask for £5-6, those supplementing their childminding/au pair jobs about £6, most experienced people (usually older and work as nanny or nursery teachers) will babysit for £8-10. i have only started using a babysitter myself in the last few months so I hope that helps. It may be more after midnight!

We pay our babysitter £6 per hour, she is the daughter of a friend.

I have found that 7 to 8 pounds an hour seems to be the going rate around here. In my day, it was 1 pound an hour (but that was in the north and a long time ago ;) )

Hi there, I am a childminder/foster mum and most of my friends and family
who babysit at night charge £7.50 per hour so it sounds like about right reading
the other replies. I think it just depends on the experience they have and things
like police checks and insurance. Like the other lady said, in the old days we just
used a neighbours kid and it cost next to nothing. About 15 years ago I use
to pay a college girl £10 for a whole night, as she would sleep over, but she was
a friends sister, go with your gut feeling and get what you think is the best you
can afford they are after all your most precious possessions :D

I pay £7-£8 an hour for evening babysiting, i.e. when kids are in bed, but £10 for daytime as it is obviously a lot more work than sitting in front of the box. :)
