Dog attack on young children in Battersea Park

Postby Cinderalla » Tue Feb 06, 2024 6:15 pm

Stories like this about big dogs attacking children in parks terrifies me. Not sure that this XL Bully strategy is working if they are out and about unmuzzled.

I run early morning, 6.30am with a friend once a week and have seen a couple of these dogs without muzzles. I'm assuming that their owners think because it is so early its not a problem but clearly it can be.

I think a ban should mean these dogs are removed from people and destroyed. End of.
Otherwise, what is the point!

Good dog owners, who are most probably not the ones with attacking out of control dogs, are the ones who have registered their dogs and use a muzzle.

The irresponsible ones who use the dogs for their own protection will not be registering etc
So it boils down to policing and we all know how effective that is

I think there should be a borough lead campaign where they walk the streets just for this purpose and remove all dogs off the streets that are not exempt. Like a raid.
Why wait for an attack and then look for the owner who runs away anyway!

It’s ridiculous!
I’m so sorry for the mum and small children who have now been traumatised and let down by the law that didn’t protect them.

Couldn't agree more with Muddyboots.  These wretched XL bullies.  They should all be 'culled' (humanely of course) so that there are no more in the UK.  At all.  There's no other way around it.

While I agree in part with the fact something must be done to make dog owners responsible, I don’t think culling ‘wretched xl bullies’ is a solution.
I’m more concerned about stabbings within the communities and the cover up of pedophiles in schools and churches to be honest.

If you actually speak to real people such as vets, charities and such like, you’ll see there are more attacks from small dogs but they’re never mentioned in the news.

Glad to see there are ‘decent human beings’ on here with ‘hearts’

mamablu,

I don’t follow your argument, are you saying we can’t as a society worry about small children being killed and attacked by dangerous dogs without it meaning we don’t care about other serious crime?

Is a life lost less lost when it’s because a dog chewed your face off ?

I hope we can live in a society where all non-events are tackled.

It’s not about heart, even good dogs can just flip as it can be a killer instinct triggered!

Nobody wants any of the horrid crimes, but in the case of dangerous dogs it should be a lot easier to sort out than human criminals.

They should be on a lead and muzzled at all times, it's the owners fault and they should be penalised, the best way to do this is take the dog away from them, better than any fine.

First and foremost, my sympathies go out to anyone who is attacked by a dog. I was attacked aged 2 by our family dog which had to be re-homed, and the trauma has remained with me for life.

I agree completely with most of the replies indicating that all dogs should be muzzled while in public.

As someone who has also lived in multiple European countries, where they have strict laws regarding dog ownership, I would go even further and say I think the UK needs to reintroduce licensing for all dogs. This entails every dog being registered and chipped, with their owner' full details on a national database which can be accessed much like the way the DVLA is for motoring fines.

Any dog that is found to be unlicensed is held at a local pound until the owner arrives to collect them, which incentivises taking ownership for poor behaviour, habits, etc.

Any dog that behaves aggressively towards anyone else, be it their owners' family members, or members of the public, results in an automatic warning letter to the owner.

Any dog that injures or kills anyone else, be it their owners' family members, or members of the public, results in being taken by the police with the possibility of being put down. The owner/s faced a £5,000 fine and depending on the circumstances (unlicensed dog, failure to used a lead/muzzle, banned breed, etc) results in jail time for the owner.

Only such measures will radically improve dog ownership and weed out the bad owners.

If you find yourself outraged by a story in The Daily Mirror, know it is by design and probably based on the most flimsiest of truth grains. Try not to read stories from that rag if you are likely to easily frightened. It's probably utter nonsense designed to frighten you and pit you against your neighbours.

This is a local story, nice try trying to make out its hysteria caused by tabloids.

I don't know what it is with dog owners trying to smear people who are concerned as ignorant tabloid readers. I for one don't read them and when I played min-golf with my children last year a dangerous dog kept running inside the golf court making my children uneasy.

I approached the owner after a while, kindly informing her the dog was running around where not allowed and bothering my children...I got shouted at and told not to read the daily mail.

Honestly...

If you know who this person it, or would recognise the owner if seen again please the to take a photo or video to help catch this person.

There was a dog attack in Battersea park Road just reported on here which lead to the dog being shot by police. 4 members of the public were hurt.

I hope it’s the same dog, maybe not .

It’s actually put me off taking my kids to Battersea park, which might seem ridiculous but I was bitten as a child and I’m now reliving a very real fear as these dogs are dangerous.
