No 1 cake tin??

Postby mummy_dani » Sun Nov 06, 2011 3:59 pm

Hi

it's my little boy's first birthday next weekend and I want to make him a cake in the shape of a number 1 but I don't really want to spend money on a tin I'll only use once. Does anyone know where I could hire a no 1 shaped cake tin from? Also, where can I find coloured rolled icing from? I've got white icing from the supermarket but they didn't have any coloured.

Any ideas gratefully received!!

Thanks

La Cuisiniere - their 'cake/baking' shop if just off Northcote Rd (round the corner from their main shop

Hi. You can hire all sorts of cake tins from the Wimbledon Sewing Machine shop on Balham High Road, near to Tooting Bec station. Likely to be cheaper than Northcote Road!

I agree with prior posts and both would have the coloured icing - but if you get white just buy some dye and using a cocktail stick just add a drop at a time and knead into the white icing. Very easy.
But noticed that Salisburys in Balham have improved their cake decoration section. So may find coloured icing there.

Good Luck
Ps recommend Australian Women's Weekly Kids Birthday Cakes - Only 6.99 excellent value with lots of ideas - i bought mine at La Cuisinere.

I hired a number 4 from La Cuisinere a couple of years ago and it was about £3 for the week. It was from the little branch on the side road (not sure of the name) round the corner from the ones on Northcote Road.

My mum always made us number cakes for all our birthdays (covered in smarties- bit of a family tradition now, all grandchildren get it now too). She just used to make a large square sponge and cut it into shape. Does waste sponge (although always a few small hands around to make light work of off cuts!) but does mean same cake tin evey year. Happy first birthday!
