Noisey neighbours

Postby Liam123 » Sat Aug 03, 2024 2:51 pm

One of our neighbours has a carpenter working in their garden every weekend and only at weekends.

They are building a shed or something similar which could probably be done in one week, but for some reason the work only happens on Saturdays when people are trying to relax at home!

During a hot summer when you want to use your garden and need the windows open this very annoying! All you can hear is angle grinders, saws and hammers!

Do people think this is acceptable? Why not have the work done during the week when people are less likely to be disturbed…?

It's difficult and I guess many of us have had the same thing - it goes with living in a crowded city.  You don't say how long you think it may go on, nor how you want your relationship with your neighbours to be when it's over.  And what do you want them to do?  If they are there at weekends then it probably disturbs them too - so the likelihood seems to be that the carpenter may only be available at weekends (ie moonlighting) or something.

Simple contact the council and ask them what the hours are for working out of doors by workmen  at the weekend. Tell neighbor  and ask them to tell carpenter the council rules. If they are working with power tools outside those hours council will send an inspector to warn them If they carry on will be fined. This includes any amplified music or radios.

The carpenter will know perfectly well that they’re only supposed to do noisy work in considerate constructor scheme hours. At the weekend that means can work from 8am to 1pm. None on Sundays. Can do work outside those times but nothing noisy (so probably less relevant for shed building but could do painting etc).
.
It is completely fair enough to ask them to stick to those hours- that’s why they exist. If they didn’t then somewhere like London you could easily have construction noise 24/7 otherwise. Other people in your area will be sticking to it so they should too. Maybe they don’t know and will be apologetic - lots of people don’t realise if never done building work before that is different to doing a bit of DIY round the house. Or you could try speaking with the carpenter in first instance - will guarantee they know they are working when they shouldn’t be- and ask them to keep the noise during scheme hours. That still gives them 5 hours on a Saturday.

Are you sure the carpenter is not a friend of theirs doing the work for free (hence doing it at the weekend)?
I’m asking as I think - but could be wrong - that rules are not as strict when it comes to DIY compared to contracted work. Wood sawing for example, I imagine it would be ok for me to saw some planks in my garden on a Sunday but not ok to hire professional builders to do it.

As a side note, how long does it take to build a shed? I would have assumed that they would be done after 1-2 weekends.
