Pelvic Girdle Pain Help!

Postby grigorjoy » Mon Dec 12, 2011 10:40 pm

Does anyone have any experience dealing with pelvic girdle pain? I experienced this very late in my first pregnancy so didn't bother about it then, but this time it's come on in the 4th month of pregnancy and I'm worried I won't be able to walk by the 9th month! Just walking up and down the stairs is causing me pain. Does anyone have any advice on what can be done to help relieve the symptoms? I've heard a special bump support band can help, as can having a massage by a physiotherapist. Really don't want to resort to meds. Any recommendations?

Hi!

I can sympathize, I had really bad SPD from 12 weeks into my pregnancy! I struggled on and didn't really do much about it as I had a bit of an unsympathetic Doctor and as a result I'm still suffering from it now and my Daughter is 8 months old. I've heard that getting Physio or seeing an Osteopath can really help so I would suggest going there first. I don't know what meds you could take being pregnant anyway, maybe also try acupuncture? x

Hi
I'm having the same problem in my second pregnancy, much earlier than in my first. I asked my obstetrician and he said this is completely normal. He suggested a maternity band (I'm not familiar with these) and apparently pilates is supposed to be helpful. He also said physio can help if it becomes too uncomfortable but that equally the discomfort may subside later on in the pregnancy, things are just shifting around earlier this time.
All the best for your pregnancy.

I experienced the same much earlier on with my third pregnancy. I went to see an Osteopath, Andrew Fung, who really helped to relieve it for me. He works on Mondays out of the Lemon Tree on Webbs Road. Contact him directly for appointments on 07958 704 935.

Thanks for your replies. I'm keeping an eye on it and hoping it doesn't get any worse, otherwise I will go to see an osteopath. I phoned the midwives today and they basically said the same - pretty common and can look into massage to help with the symptoms.

I had the same thing and as soon as the pain started in my second pregnancy I went to see a physiotherapist who specialised in antenatal physiotherapy (attached to the antenatal clinic). She gave me a few simple exercises to do (just a few minutes a day) and a large band of elasticated cloth to put under my bump if it got bad (never used it). The exercises really did the trick, each one targeted a particular set of muscles and because they tightened the area up it kind of kept everything together if you see what I mean. The pain was minimal and went as soon as I had the baby (unlike the first time when the SPD carried on for about 3 months after the birth). I'd say it was well worth it, and free on the NHS!

I know exactly what you are feeling, and I too am worried that I am going to be completely immobile very soon. I have strapping left over from my first pregnancy, which the physio at the hospital gave me, and it is working a bit.

I told my midwife as soon as my hips flared up this time arround, and I have an appointment with the hospital physio in Jan. I have also spoken to the physio, and they have said that this time around the strapping might not be enough.

Please get yourself seen by the hospital physio, before you do yourself permanent harm.
