The two free schools, Tooting Primary School and the one in Balham/Upper Tooting have been approved too! Yay for some common sense at last and more primary school places!

If I'm not mistaken, the Tooting Primary is part of Graveney School so I think this will be on Fransciscan Road nearer Tooting Broadway and the second Balham/ Upper Tooting school will be on Balham High Road where the Youth Court is (next to Tesco petrol station).
Maybe someone else could confirm?

I have heard the same as MrsContractormum about the locations of the Tooting and Balham schools.

We do not need more religious-selective schools in Wandsworth. We need more good schools that are open to as many children as is possible. This is discrimination, plain and simple, and a depressing development.

I agree with chelseadad, I don't understand why tax payers should have to pay for faith schools (any and all). We just need more schools that all our kids can get into. There are too many selective schools in the system as it is so this isn't good news to me at all!

Completely agree with the last 2 posters. It's ridiculous that when we are so desperate for schools as it is they decide to use the space to open a Jewish one, not accessible to all. I do not support this decision.

There are (early stage) plans afoot for a free school serving the Northside/Shaftesbury area too. They're currently looking for people to be on the steering committee. Email for info: shaftesburyfreeschool@gmail.com

Personally I'd like to see a free school established to serve the 'black spot' just outside the Honeywell catchment but not v near anything else ('other' side of Broomwood Rd).

@mungomuffit

IMO, academic selection is the only relevant kind of selection we should encourage. So, I don't think there's any harm in supporting academic selection. It's religious selection that is the problem. It disadvantages the unaligned parent, but even worse, it punishes the child, for reasons that the child has no control over.

Thank you all for your comments. We are very sympathetic to the concerns that many parents have regarding faith schools and this a discussion that will run and run. Many of the SLJPS supporting parents (a large proportion of whom are not Jewish) have experienced this first hand. I am a parent who's children are not eligible for any state primary schools in our neighbourhood because they are christian schools. SLJPS is a Jewish school but we are commited to offering 50% of the places to children based on Wandsworth's admissions criteria ensuring that as we all agree our children have access to the high level of education that they deserve. We wish the team who are looking to apply next year lots of luck and hope that those parents who feel strongly about the lack of schools in their communities will put their weight behind this new project and bring another much neded school to our neighbourhood.

I just want to reiterate that the new Jewish School will have a 50:50 admission structure
With 50 % of places (that's 15 places) accessible to children according to Wandsworth admissions criteria.
This will be an Excellent school, multicultural and inclusive and will serve our community
