"a decent Indian"? I'm surprised because I thought Askash and Indian Moment were pretty good, though I haven't eaten there for a while.

Indian Moments , definitely not ! Neither is it proper Indian curry nor are the waiters very service orientated.
The one trip we made there with friends left us shameface and never going there again !

As for shops on Northcote Road, would never want to replace Debenhams, great selection. A JLP , maybe . Too many chains though will Northcote Road into another has been high street.
Would love to see a lot more independent shops and selections. Dont mind if the kiddy/baby theme continues.

Re the curry sitch..
Last time I tried Akash earlier this year the meal was very ropey. Just badly done sauces. The service is ol and the surroundings are ok but It was disappointing. The irony is that I have always dismissed it as a place to eat since I previously lived in northcote road in the early 90's and it wasn't all that then. but my partner wanted to try it so I gave it another chance.
Is it just me having been unlucky?
I havnt tried the other curry place. My favourite curry house is the Abbeville Tandoori - one of the best in London IMHO.
Another very good one is Kahns on lavender hill. There is also a good one in clapham high st next to sainsbury called maharajah. it's one of the oldest around and the food is quite good.

Not Northcote but Webbs is parallel. Sad then to read that Couleur Cafe has shut through business conditions. I can't say that I was a regular patron but when I did frequent I found their coffee and treats very yummy.

They are selling off their fittings and there's a list on the door if anyone is interested.

Following on from my previous post on Webb's Road, it appears that the independent retailer is being gutted from that street too.

Couleur Cafe (currently selling pants!)...........now Dee & me which has hardly let the paint dry and finally Atelier Furnishings is closing it's doors. I guess the days of shabby chic has had it's day.

FIngers crossed something good take their place(s).

Carrying on with the Webbs Road theme again - Maison Des Roses has a big 'To Let' sign on it. That's 3 shops going, going, gone. Even this area isn't immune to the retailing gutting that is happening across the country. There couldn't be anymore Estate Agents on Northcote or Hairdressers on Webbs could there? :o

To some extent the area is a victim of its own success. Rental increases
mean that only chains or high mark up businesses can afford to be here.
That said, Wandsworth council has a lot to answer for as their
business rates have jumped astronomically in the last few years.

Last Saturday I found a sort of microstall in Broomwood Road angle with Northcote Road, in the outside premises of a wine store. A lovely spanish guy with deli artisan products from Spain (Not sure if organic, but all the goods had the same artisan stamp which means quality and healthy stuff for me). I grabbed some of the products and we had the easiest home dinner for ages, and everything was absolutely delicious!

I am so sad about what's happening on webbs road. Atelier was one of my favourite shops, le coloeur cafe a lovely coffee shop and maison des roses is gorgeous too. I spoke with someone in one of the shops and they said the landlord had put the rent up so hugely, they couldn't operate anymore. So I want to understand, why these faceless landlords are killing off these wonderful small businesses in our area? It is also prohibitive to all us mums who would possibly like to start a kids coffee shop or similar.

We bought a house round the corner partly because we liked the community feel these little independent shops gave the area, it is so so sad....

Reading the detail on the repossession/landlord notices during the last purge on Northcote Road it appears that ultimately quite a few of the owners were Saudi Property Agencies. Thus I can't imagine they give two hoots about what we think here rather than the bottom line on the balance sheet.

Just in case you might suspect my post might be xenophobic, it's not, it's what happens when local property isn't controlled by local people.
