Can anyone recommend a fab kids birthday cake supplier?

Postby bambinomerino » Fri Feb 19, 2010 11:54 am

A friend and I are looking for recommendations of great local kids birthday cake suppliers. We have two 5 year olds that have their hearts set on a star wars cake which I'm afraid is beyond my capabilities!

I'm not a fan of those edible papery cake topper things (but may be a last resort) and looking for something more 'wow'.

One supplier I know of is Cakes 4 Fun in Putney - has anybody used them before?

Recommendations very welcome please!

How about a light sabre cake - just need a few swiss rolls, stick together with ready made spreadable icing + then cover with appropriate coloured icing for handle + blade? You can get glitter and all kinds of fancy things as well from cake decorating shops if you want? I did a similar idea for my son's Harry Potter party making a broomstick + everyone was v impressed (and really easy!)
Hope this helps???

I had my Sons Birthday cake made by Northcote Patisserie on Northcote rd. I was really happy with it and it wasn't nearly as expensive as Cakes 4 Fun.

Another idea is to make a standard cake and buy a Star Wars transfer or cake topper off Ebay.

I'm quite an inexperienced "novelty" cake maker - not a professional by any means but have made loads over the years for my now-teenage stepdaughters (most recently made a Gruffalo for my 3 year old) - would be happy to send you pictures of my work if you're interested and we could take it from there? I only use organic flour, butter, eggs and have oodles of glitters, icing tips etc - my mum was a professional wedding cake maker (in the States) so I am a pretty dab hand at buttercream creations.

I fully expect to have to start making R2-D2 and Death Stars in the future (please, not x-wings!) as my husband is already encouraging a love of all things Star Wars in our son! :P

My friend Sue is currently setting up her own cake making/decorating
business. She specialises in novelty cakes and she made a fantastic 3d
dragon cake for my 3 year old's birthday. Email me if you are interested
and I will send you a photo of the cake and give you her contact
information. Oh and not only did it look good, it also tasted great!
