Gymnastics - Mayfield or Tooting Gymnastics?

Postby Suslik » Mon Sep 24, 2012 6:15 pm

Hi all,
I am looking to send my daughter to a gymnastics school as she is very keen on rolls and beams and what have you. I went to see two local schools - Mayfield and Tooting gymanstics. I liked the look of both. Mayfield as far as i can tell has a much stronger reputation locally but is also much more expensive. Tooting looks ok but I have not heard any reviews/feedback on it at all.

has anyone tried both and can compare? otherwise if you only have tried one I'd appreciate your feedback too.

thanks!

Hi can't account for tooting, but mayfield is a professionally run club, expensive- yes, but does have a fair few coaches etc. can be a waiting list and if you are any good you get invited to the squad. The squad competes nationally and trains hard! The children also get a chance to do their BAGA awards - brings me back to my days! I don't think tooting takes it to that level, but worth checking that's it's like for like.

If you live walking distance to tooting leisure centre then I'd consider it, but we had to drive from Earlsfield which isn't too far but there is not enough space and the traffic on the way home is impossible. It's also very crowded and extremely hectic, if your child is young it could be overwhelming. Mine was 3 at the time we did it for a few weeks and had to drop out as the combination of all the issues was just too much. We are now at TJ's gym, and it's a bit better, a lot less kids but still very professional.

Not sure about Tooting but my 3 year old has just started at Mayfield and loves it.

The preschool class is a reasonable size and the coaches seem to know their stuff and are good with the kids. I liked it because, as a previous poster said, it seems very professional and takes the sport fairly seriously.

Parking is easy and free too.

We moved from Tooting to Mayfeild and have not looked back. My daughter found Tooting 'fun' but didn't really progress there. She started at Crystal Palace Gym club and had started working towards the different badges, and took it all very seriously. I found Tooting lacked seriousness although my daughter had a good time she did not really progress, learn and move on from where she started. She is now at Mayfeild and within 18 months has progressed beyond belief. The equipment is far superior and the children get a real sense of achievement as they are generally awarded a different badge each term.
Yes more expensive, but in my experience definitely worth it.

Great advice - thanks very much to all! the main problem i have with Mayfield is its location - I work full time, and public transport options for my nanny with 2 kids in tow are rather not exciting. will see what we can do. seems that mayfield wins hands down! Hope i can get something sorted around the transport options.

Someone mentioned Mayfield is expensive - but there is nothing on their website about fees. Could you confirm approximately how much the fees are? Thank you

It's approx 200-250 a term, somewhere between that price range. But they are very good
