Best gift for a friend with her first baby

Postby NorthcoteLuvvie » Sun Mar 21, 2010 6:22 pm

Hi
I am organising a bag full of goodies for a friend who has just given birth. I would love ideas for what I should put in it. I've got quite a bit to spend as we've collected from a number of friends so it should be fun!

Any suggestions gratefully received! I want to do stuff which is both fun and useful. Vaseline, nappies, champagne, massage vouchers what are all the things you'd have loved? Should we put in babysitting vouchers (so I could babysit for her?) or is that too soon?

Thanks!

Hello! I think you've had a very nice and generous idea.
I personally would have loved the most useful -and not always obvious things to buy- for the baby, like a travel blackout blind, a plastic baby bath support, pram hooks for the bags, a breastfeeding pillow, etc. But also things for myself I can use or do (no clothes!), a hairdresser/manicure/pedicure voucher, a compact make up "pick me up" set, a back massage where she can take the baby (or you can offer to go and take care of the baby during 30 mins?).
We all like different things but I am sure she'll see how much thought and effort you are putting into this, and she'll like it very much.
Good luck.

The best present i got when i came home from hospital was 2 weeks of frozen meals delivered to my door so no cooking to be done. Was a fantastic idea and they came from a company called Chef on Board.

When two of my close friends had babies, I made them gift boxes full of little things that I had found very useful with my daughter. Not expensive, but handy:

6 pack of bibs
9 pack of muslins
bath thermometer
buggy book
toy straps for buggy
Gap baby socks (only ones that didnt fall off!)
black and white cloth book
Crabtree and Evelyn hand cream (for mum)
Whittards selection of teas and coffees (for visitors)
tin of M&S biscuits
ear thermometer
dummies (choose to use or not)
'What To Expect..The First Year' - Eisenberg (book)

Hope that gives you some more ideas.

I love making hampers for my friends when they have their first baby. I found from experience, that lots of chocolate was always gratefully recieved after my daughter was born, also bubble bath, scented candles for Mum, sore nipple cream and bottom balm (Waitrose do a great one which is all organic and can be used for both Mummy and baby)! Crabtree and Evelyn do some lovely baby organic products too.

Bibs and muslins are great and perhaps a Jelly Cat soft toy for the baby?

And I cannnot recommend enough Clare Byam-Cook's book on What to expect if you breastfeed and what if you can't - a lifesaver for me! Available from Amazon and most bookshops.

Hope this helps!

Hi there

I can help you with the chocolate suggestion, I sell personalised chocolate bars. You could give your friend a few bars with the baby's name, birth date / time & weight, with a message from you on the back of the wrapper. There are quite a few wrapper designs in the range for newborns.

My website is www.itsallaboutthewrapper.co.uk

I had a baby a week ago so know that your friend will welcome some chocolate!!

Hope this helps

Hi, what a lovely idea! If you want to add a voucher to this great hamper,
we do all sorts of lovely treatments at the Lemon Tree, Webbs Road, and
you can quickly order a voucher on line and we can send it out to you.
They are available at any price from a £1 upwards and can be used towards
lots of super relaxing treatments or quick tidy-ups to make mum feel better
- like manicures and pedicures, which are always popular at this time of
year. They are valid for a year so can be used anytime she feels like a
break. Call Izzy on 0207 2281020 or visit our website @
http://www.lemontree-london.com. Happy Easter
