Trunki - worth buying? Post Reply

Hi!
Is it worth to buy it or is it as good as any other suitcase? How handy is it when on the airport / in the plane? Does your child like it?
I'm planning to buy one for my son, but I'm not sure if it's a good present...
Any thoughts much appreciated !

Down to personal preference I guess but yes on all counts from me!! My daughters both have one and it's very much "theirs" with all their colouring books, toys and general travelling distractions to look after. It's also really helpful in transit as they can sit on them and be pulled along by mummy or daddy rather than us having to carry tired little legs.

We've had our Trunki for a couple of years now and more often than not we don't use it. I've found it quite bulky and difficult to deal with within the confined space on a plane - we find it easier to have all the kids' toys etc at our feet rather than in the overhead locker to save getting up and down all the time. You can buy a separate soft-sided bag that fits inside the Trunki that's handy if you just want to take a few things out for your child to play with but, even with that, we've found it a bit of a hassle. I've also found that it can be rather hard to steer when pulling a child along on it. Our son does love it but is equally pleased to take his own backpack full of all his things for the flight. That said, I do have friends who are happy with their Trunki.

Definitely worth it!
Our daughter loves hers and we wouldn't travel without it. Especially handy to move around the airport quickly with little legs!

We bought them for our daughters (now 5 and 7) 2 years ago when we moved to Botswana.
I'd always thought they were a pointless gimmick and would prove too bulky but they have been utterly brilliant. The kids pull/ride on them when we fly (steering is an issue but that certainly adds excitement to long waits in airports) and they have been taken on camping trips all over Southern Africa which is not something I had ever envisioned for them. They act as toys on trips when we can take limited toys for them, are still going strong after 2 years of heavy use and have survived journeys where we have checked them in to the hold rather than take them as hand luggage.
On a recent flight back to the UK where I brought the girls by myself and had to get straight onto a train and then the Eurostar to France I did decide the trunkies would be too much hassle and went with rucksacks but in general they are fantastic.

We love the trunki for many of the reasons already given. Our son enjoys packing his toys for trips, it has entertainment value at the airport and it is a useful ride on vehicle when he's flagging on those long walks around the airport. Also being a hard case it protects toys from getting crushed. Oh, and we limit his toys to what fits in trunki so it stops him taking too many toys with him! I would add though that we generally don't need to get much in the way of toys out during a flight as our son just loves the flying experience and spends his time looking at the shapes of the clouds and landscape below. If your children are wanting to get different toys out every few minutes then it might not work as well as a backpack during the flight.
