Curtain rail for bay window

Postby joolia » Mon Jan 14, 2013 1:04 pm

Hi - we are looking to put up curtains in our bay window and are having difficulties finding a suitable rail. John Lewis offer poles that can be custom to fit the bay made but I've been warned that these can sag in the middle. We have had a quote for a rail by a local curtain maker which was over £500 just for the rail! Has anyone found a cheaper option / supplier / fitter?
Many thanks in advance
Best wishes
Julia

Hi Joolia. Try Dave, he built us some cupboards and bulit in wardrobes. He is very handy around woodwork. Im sure he will custom build a rail for you. His rates are very good and i very much doubt it will come close to £500. heres his number. Good luck :D 07939581225

Hi, a decent bay track will not sag in the middle as you have supports etc obviously depending what sort of curtain weight you are trying to hang is most important to what type of rail you use. personally i would always recommend a custom made track which is made on site to fit your window.
I dont know what the aliminimum track that you can bend yourself in John Lewis is like as I have never used it. I alway use a integra regular track. If you do go to John Lewis and want a custom made track they will sell you a silent gliss system. with the silent gliss system it is a closed unit so if there are any problems (fittings brake or track is misused etc) the whole thing has to go back to factroy to be fixed. I have always used a integra track as the pieces can be replaced on site and then everyone is happy. also I forgot to mention I believe a silent gliss system is 2- 3 times the price. Obviously this is what i do for a living and i do have a small website tradecurtains.co.uk

good luck

Have you tried Nick Auston Design on Battersea Rise. They will come out and measure the bay and be able to advise on which type of track is most suitable. They can take care of the whole thing from measuring to fitting and hanging curtains etc. They do also make curtains if you're still looking for these too.

We had custom metal rails made and fitted by Revamp (from their west Norwood shop but they are now on Bellevue rd too). For a bay this came in about £200 compared to £600 at John Lewis! They are very sturdy and have had no problems. The make they sell is Cameron Fuller.

We actually bought a bay window pole kit from Homebase. We had to cut one of the poles to size with a hacksaw but it was very easy - took the man of the house an hour or two to put up.
